Parent Strategies

Planning How to Say "No" to Drugs and Alcohol

drugs and alcohol

Many of us have told our children the importance of saying "no" when being offered drugs or alcohol.  However, how many of us have equipped them with the right tools to say no?  A simple "no" by itself is often not enough to deflect peer pressure.  It's important for kids to have a good reason.  That reason may vary depending on your child, their peer group, and the particular situation.

As parents, it's crucial for us to sit down with our kids to help them prepare for various scenarios where they could be offered drugs and alcohol.  Role playing or discussing different situations can help you and your child to come up with creative ways to say "no" to negative choices, while still allowing your child to avoid potential embarrassment in front of their peers.  Don't wait for a problem to arise before you begin discussing prevention strategies with your family.

For additional help in forming a family substance abuse prevention plan, be sure to read our "Conversation Starters" packet and "Talking With Kids" brochure.  To keep the conversation going and encourage even more positive family discussions, consider getting a pack of our notMYkid Conversation Cards.

A Special Thank You to All of Our Partners in Law Enforcement

notMYkid would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to all of our partners in law enforcement.  Your commitment to prevention, dedication to leadership, and willingness to share your time with us has allowed us to grow in the community and serve more Arizona families than ever before.  A successful prevention program requires several key pieces, and you are an essential one.  We couldn't do it without you.  So from all of us at notMYkid, thank you.
You make it possible for notMYkid to take a message of hope and positive life choices to students, parents, and educators in Arizona.  It's because of your generosity that notMYkid is able to reach so many young people across the state and prevent the pain, sorrow, and even death that can result from destructive youth behaviors.

At notMYkid, we inspire positive life choices by educating our community about the consequences of destructive youth behaviors. Young adults who have overcome life-controlling addictions and behaviors share their personal stories with middle and high school students. In an effort to promote our prevention message we educate adults on the same addictions and destructive behaviors. Our goal is to increase awareness of the challenges kids face, provide information, and offer resources to support the success of students, families and educators.
