Transitions at the Alliance
Rhonda Lynn, who has been with the Alliance Française of Portland for 14 months, will be resigning mid-September in order to focus on some per sonal matters. Rhonda shares, "I am so lucky to have been a part of this strong and vibrant organization with a dedicated staff at its core. In a short time I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderfully interesting people who share a love of French language and culture. A special thanks to the staff who have gone above and beyond daily. A lot of good projects have been set in motion, and I look forward to seeing one of the most dynamic Alliances move to the next stage of its development." The Alliance leadership has selected longtime board member Sherry Charles (photo at the left) to steer the organization over the next several months in the role of Acting Executive Director; Jennifer Coyne assumes the board Secretary role. Given the rapid growth of the Alliance to its position of #7 in the U.S. - reflected in the growing number of students - the organization is now recruiting candidates for a brand new, full-time position of School Director. Fun Technology Not to Miss
If you are looking for free online technology tools to aid in your retention of French, look no further than the French government's website, www.elysee.fr. It offers news articles of varying lengths that can be "read aloud" with simultaneous text highlighting. To experience the technology, click here for a short report on Hollande's recent telephone call to Obama after the heroic acts of the three Americans on the Thalys train in Belgium. Click on ÉCOUTER (as shown in the graphic below). The software then reads the article to you, highlighting each word as it is spoken. You have the option to set the speed of the audio (we recommend sticking with "moyen" or "rapide"). Combining the visual text with the native-fluent audio, all in the meaningful context of current news events, makes for an effective tool to aid in retention for intermediate and advanced students.
