French Pearls in the Pearl on May 7
This coming "First Thursday" in the Pearl, a monthly celebration of the area's shops and restaurants, will showcase Fred Sagues, a Tahiti-based designer of jewelry featuring natural Tahitian pearls. Look for him at Alchemy Jewelers (1022 NW Lovejoy). Fred, shown here in the photo with Laura Mapes of Alchemy, is visiting from Tahiti and speaks fluent French. Come chat with him, learn about pearls cultivated sustainably in the lagoons of French Polynesia. Sip Tahitian Island Vanilla Rum punch and view his and other French-inspired jewelry designs. Click here for the event details on Facebook (the trunk show runs May 7-9).
First CINE-CLUB Meeting on May 29
The first Alliance-PSU CINE-CLUB discussion will be on Friday, May 29. The meeting will be presented by PSU professor Annabelle Dolidon and the topic will be Claude Chabrol's 1988 movie, Une Affaire de femmes. The film raises issues of national identity, collaboration and food scarcity in the context of the occupation of France during WWII. Participants are encouraged to watch the film in advance of the workshop (the film is on platforms such as Hulu Plus and is available on DVD at the Alliance), then discuss whether Marie, the main character, is good or evil, the victim of a conservative government or an opportunist. Sign up for discussions in English, French or both. Visit the event page for details and click here for the sign-up link.

Alliance French Playlists on Spotify
Pascaline Lefèbvre in the Alliance office has created a musical library which contains a substantial selection of French song titles, on SPOTIFY's streaming music service. Additionally, she and two other staff members have created recommended playlists for members, students and bulletin readers to enjoy. The collections and playlists can be accessed via your personal SPOTIFY accounts (many of you already have accounts on that service). Future playlists might include ones for children, classics, and so on. Click here for a tutorial on how to access the Alliance's profile, "afpdx." Enjoy! Email pascalinel@afportland.org with questions or suggestions.
Where is Juliette & Why Is She in the News?
The Alliance regularly hosts interns from France. Members may recall Juliette François who interned with us a few years ago. Juliette was the mastermind behind some very popular tutorials such as the one that explained the nuances between au fait, en fait, et en effet (click here). So where is Juliette now and why is she in the news? Find the answers in this just-published article in France's La Voix du Nord, a Lille-based newspaper - click here. Two vocab notes: 1) baroudeuse = celle qui ne craint pas le risque, l'aventure, 2) vadrouilleuse = celle qui aime à se promener sans but précis. Congratulations, Juliette!
