The Alliance will hold a special advance screening of the latest Philippe Garrel film, Jealousy (La Jalousie) on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7pm at Living Room Theaters. Members and non-members at all levels of French can attend (the film is subtitled in English); click here for info and here for the trailer). After the film, participants will have the option to discuss the movie with other attendees and Alliance staff over a glass of wine. Specially priced tickets are available exclusively through the Alliance for this private event (the theater donates 100% of proceeds). Click here to reserve tickets at the low price of $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Seating will be limited; reserve soon. 21 and over.

December Workshops Tempt with Variety

Each December the Alliance features a "short term" between the 10-week fall and winter terms. It's a chance for new students to try out a short course and an opportunity for current students to work on a particular skill area such as phonetics, or to get in a some study/review hours prior to the January-March term. The December term contains several totally new offerings, including lunch-time conversation practice with Alliance staff, themed classes on "edible" expressions, and much much more! Click here for the class options which are listed from beginner through advanced. The December term features primarily adult classes but also offers art workshops for children (ages 7-14). Also offered is a free trial class for beginners who've never before attended an Alliance class.

Beaujolais Nouveau Novelties: Spirits and Salt
The Beaujolais Nouveau event, to be held November 21 at the Heathman, will offer not only wine but also spirits. Look for representatives from Hardy Cognac USA to pour tastings their rare Cognacs as well as cocktails made from Elation Nectar de Poire. Pear Williams are selected at their peak of ripeness and the fruit is macerated in aged cognac, creating a liqueur that hints of pear, vanilla and honey.
Nestled among the food buffets this year, guests will find the newest in culinary exotica, salt block cooking. Shown here, salt block cooking allows the development of subtle flavors and introduces a variety of natural minerals for a healthy and unique dégustation.
Guests will also enjoy tastings of cocktails made with Balinoff Vodka. A blend of fine French whe
at "eau de vie", with purified spring water, naturally filtered through the limestone rocks of the cognac region, Balinoff's pureness sets it apart. The premium vodka is produced by a 4th generation master distiller in the heart of the Cognac region.
These are but three of the new features this year. A few event tickets are still available; click here for reservations.
Tip for Intermediate/Advanced Students
If you are an intermediate or advanced student who'd like to tune your listening comprehension in between your Alliance classes, then consider this option.  The website usa-expat.com is a site geared to French expatriates living in the United States, and one of the site's features is a small section called Actu France-USA. It contains multiple short video clips of news stories in French. Below each video clip is a transcription (in French) of the story. This is a great format for high intermediate and advanced learners of French. First view and listen to the video. Then read the transcription. Then go back and listen to the clip again. Repeat as needed. Click here to sample (make sure to pick one of the 10 options in the red tab marked Actu France-USA). Free.
