Tartes Event Features New Winners
More than 200 people sampled the tartes made by nearly 30 chef-contestants at the 7th Annual Concours de Tartes aux Fruits at the Multnomah Athletic Club last week. First place was captured by Kristina Montaine of Black Rabbit Restaurant at McMenamins Edgefield; her entry was a fig and chèvre tarte made with pistachio rosemary sablé, honeyed chèvre, roasted figs glazed in red wine caramel, fresh blackberries. Second place was won by Madeline Tomseth of Bees & Beans (a blackberry and basil tart with lime cream) and in third place was Hana Roth of Ringside Hospitality Group (a fromage blanc tart with Oregon peaches and Amaretti crust). Click here to view the photo album of the event. Many thanks to professional photographer Heather Heaton for creating this fine tribute to the chefs.
Portes Ouvertes to Host VIP Guest

The September 4 Portes Ouvertes (Open House) event at the Kamm House (pictured here) will feature Susan Winkler, co-author of the Paris Shopping Companion books and author of a new novel, Portrait of a Woman in White. Visitors at the open house will also meet with Alliance teachers and staff to register for classes in the fall term (which begins the week of September 15) - the open house is the deadline for getting 10% off classfees. Class registration is already underway online at www.afportland.org. Close to 50 classes at all levels are available. Not sure of your level? Take an online placement test, call the office at 503.223.8388 or attend the free Open House on September 4. The Nuances of "Tu" versus "Vous"

William Alexander is the author of the forthcoming book, Flirting With French: How a Language Charmed Me, Seduced Me, and Almost Broke My Heart. In a previous issue we referenced his NY Times article on brain research. Last month in the LA Times he published a humorous diagram on the use of "tu" versus "vous," which has been widely referenced on the Internet. It's also drawn the attention of the French media - click here to read several paragraphs (in French) from Le Monde, where it was noted, "La nuance reste délicate à saisir pour les anglophones, qui n'ont pas d'équivalent dans leur langue." Confused? Come take a class with us!

Openings in Two-Day Weekend Immersion

The Alliance's summer immersion program has drawn students not only from Oregon and Washington but from California as well. Two one-week programs held in June and July drew a top rating of 5 points (out of 5) and comments like: "I can't say enough about the quality of instruction and the professionalism of the profs." Students were tested in grammar, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension at the beginning and end of the program; they showed an average improvement of 17%, with some as high as 54%. Two week-end (2-day) immersion programs will be held in August. The Aug. 16-17 program is for intermediate students and has 3 openings. The Aug. 23-24 program is for high intermediate/advanced students and has 1 opening. Call the Alliance office to see if the immersion weekends are a good fit for you.
