Resto Recommendations from a Raffle Winner

Alliance member Lauri Winther was the lucky winner of last spring's Delta Air Lines raffle and redeemed her trip last month, visiting Paris and Beaune. She had a chance to try out the chic Paris restaurant, La Buvette (shown here) and recommends it; the resto was profiled earlier this year in a NY Times article. In Beaune, Lauri visited and recommends all four of the restaurants profiled in the Wall Street Journal - click here for online photos of the featured restaurants: Bistro de l'Hôtel, Caves Madeleine, Ma Cuisine, and Le Comptoir des Tontons Restaurant Cave à vin. Wanting to try these out yourself? Try your luck to win airline tickets in our November raffle sponsored by Delta Air Lines; click here for complete details and to purchase raffle tickets online for just $10!

Paris Was the Place - Author Event

Fans have alerted us to author Susan Conley's reading at Powell's Books on West Burnside, set for Tuesday, November 5, at 7:30pm. Conley's writing has appeared in The Paris Review, The Harvard Review, The North American Review, and elsewhere. Her book, Paris Was the Place, is fiction but it touches on modern-day immigration challenges and includes details on Paris (Conley minored in French and lived in Paris). See her interview on Amazon. The Powell's event is free; books will be available for purchase. (Photo credit Michael Lionstar.)

Festivals across the U.S.:  Portland's upcoming Beaujolais Nouveau festival at the Heathman, a partnership between the Alliance and the FACC, is the largest on the West Coast and one of several premium events coordinated across the United States. Click here for the website that shows where all the festivals are being held; then click on each location for details and links to each festival's web page.

Artists Reception: Alliance staff member Meriem Bouhaddouda's art will be featured at a reception in the lobby of the Westshore Apartments (222 SW Pine) on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Free; light refreshments will be served. Her work represents ink on watercolor paper of Algerian women from late 19th century through the 1950s, a period during which Algeria was a French colony/department.

For All Upcoming Events, visit the handy Events list online. Multiple events are scheduled for November, most have an opening, such as this Friday's French Masters.

For Open Enrollment for the December and Winter terms, stay tuned to this newsletter. Target open enrollment is mid-November; the Winter term is typically the largest of the year so look for many choices of classes at all levels and on many themes!

Expressions using animals: Our teachers came across this text on the Internet; it demonstrates the richness of idiomatic expressions tied to animals: click here. Even more helpful for comprehension, though, are the expressions set to images: click here and run the slideshow!
