Events - Wrapped Up, and Upcoming

A group of close to 50 attended the Alliance-sponsored Anne Willan author event at Powell's (photo here) on Monday (Oct. 21). If you missed it, Willan donated some signed books to the Alliance so look for those at a future fundraiser. Last Friday, an informational session was held on Bilingualism for Children: Benefits and Expectations. Many in the audience were surprised at the new research presented by Jane Fabulet-Roberts, Alliance Children's Program Manager. Next up for events will be the November 1 French Masters, Doing Business in France on November 5 (see the last bulletin), the Malian Storytelling event on November 8, and the Beaujolais Nouveau event at the Heathman on November 22.

French Classes - Updates and Tech News

Currently 384 students are enrolled in the Alliance's fall term (now in week 6) of group classes and private lessons. In December a select group of intersession classes will be offered and in January the full winter terms starts (Jan. 6 - March 15). Prospective students are already starting to use the online placement test. Optionally, plan to attend the December 5 open house at the Kamm House (shown here) to meet with teachers for placement and class sign-up. The schedules for the Intersession and the Winter Term will be published online mid-November and will be announced in the Quoi de Neuf. In other news, the Alliance is adding large new flatscreen TVs in all classrooms. Comments Pedagogy Manager Linda Fuchs, "Increasingly, web-based content of all kinds is employed to reinforce learning. Our teachers are looking forward to putting the new flatscreen TVs to use!"

Beaujolais Nouveau Event in the News

Portland's 12th Annual Beaujolais Nouveau event, now just 4 weeks away, was listed in Monday's Oregonian coverage of key November wine events. Click here for the article. The event draws around 450 attendees each year, including a sizable number of representatives of the press. For the past couple years the attendees have watched cameramen and broadcasters from Live@7 as they navigate the buffets and the party-goers. Thinking about attending? Check out the online gallery of photos from 2012 (one is shown here) and find complete details on the upcoming 2013 event online. Tickets are still available!

Member Announcements, False-Friend Tip,
Ex-Patriate Survey, and More

Haute Cuisine: An Alliance member alerts us to the availability of the 2013 film, Haute Cuisine, on Netflix. Click here for details. Merci, Robert!

Fresh French Shorts: Readers are asking if this fall will bring another festival of Fresh French Shorts. The NW Film Center has it set for Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30 (the weekend after Thanksgiving). The line-up, determined by the center's director, will be published soon. Alliance members get a reduced t2012 FreshFrench Shortsicket price. Sorry, no free food/wine reception this year -- it simply got too big!

Resource Sought: A member has an interest in finding an accountant or tax/financial specialist who is versed in tax implications of the sale of property in France on the taxes of a U.S. resident (ex-pat). If you have recommendations, email info@afportland.org.

Notary News: Alliance member Pascale Steig, who is a State of Oregon Notary Public, can notarize signatures on French-language documents. Steig (email: PSteig@gmail.com), a new member of Les Amis, provides 10% discounts on notarization services to card-carrying Alliance members. Click here for the current online listing of all Les Amis organizations.

Tip/Tuyau: Note that éventuellement is a false friend. In French it means "maybe," thus a synonym of peut-être. In English, eventually implies certitude. Il réussira éventuellement à l'examen therefore means he'll maybe pass the exam, he might, he has a chance. But in English, "He'll eventually pass the exam" means that it will happen (in time, or after repeated efforts). Therefore the English sense of eventually would be expressed with: "Il réussira finalement à l'examen." or "À terme, il réussira à l'examen." Need help? Come take an Alliance class!

TV: The Alliance has a large older-format TV (i.e. deep and a bit heavy) to give away. Works fine. Email info@afportland.org.
