French Designers in FashioNXT Show

FashioNXT, designated by TIME magazine as the U.S.'s best fashion show outside of New York, will feature two French nulldesigners (among 30 designers in all), including Project Runway winners. The event will be October 9-12 at Vigor Shipyard on Swan Island and will feature the designers' spring and fall of 2014 collections. Look for runways shows, meet-and-greet sessions with designers, and exhibits. The two French labels are Ethos Paris and Yane Mode (design shown here). Alliance bulletin readers can get 10% off ticket prices by using the code, Fnt13410, when ordering online at www.fashionxt.net. The show benefits the nonprofit Girls Inc., an organization of which First Lady Michelle Obama is the Honorary Board Chair.

Fall Term Sets Enrollment Records
Portlanders are seeking to learn French in record numbers - the Alliance's fall term has a record 400 students in small-group classes and privnullate lessons - an increase of 25% from 2010. With a staff of 17 experienced teachers, the class size remains at an average of 7-8 students. Explains Education Manager Kathryn Mascorella, "In many academic settings it's not unusual to have classes with 20+ students. However, at the Alliance, when classes edge toward 10, we carefully monitor the dynamic and determine if a shift or a split (for example, a second section) is warranted. Students should also feel free to contact the office with suggestions." A small number of openings remain; email info@afportland.org or call 503.223.8388.

New Parking Options in October
The Alliance is partnering with other area organizations to expand parking optionsnull for students. Effective immediately, students attending night classes at the Alliance can use the parking spaces at Willamette Dental after 6:00pm each evening (that lot is located just across SW Jefferson, adjacent to the Goose Hollow Inn). Beginning October 1st, students (daytime and evening) will also have the option to park for free at a lot near  SW 18th Avenue and SW Jefferson - a 2-block walk from the Alliance Kamm House. Many thanks to our partners, FUMC and Willamette Dental. (Note: students will receive further details from the office.)
The News from Europe "à la Witt"
Alliance director Linda Witt, who is traveling this week in Germany, reports that 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of German-Amenullrican friendship. In Berlin, near the world-famous Potsdamer Platz, is a display commemorating the Élysée Treaty that was signed fifty years ago by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer. The treaty's purpose was to establish a new foundation for improved relations between the two countries. One portion of the display is shown here; the text is, "L'Allemagne et la France, ensemble pour une Europe forte." In other news from Europe, Portlanders may be interested to know that Nicolas Batum played a key role in leading France's team to win the Eurobasket championship on September 22. Batum was the leading scorer with 17 points and 6 rebounds in the final game against Lithuania. If you look carefully you'll see Batum along with Tony Parker in this photo online on a German sports site.

Thérèse Desqueyroux at LRT: Living Room Tnullheaters is featuring Claude Miller's final film, Thérèse Desqueyroux, starring Audrey Tautou (of Amélie fame). Click here for the trailer and visit Living Room Theaters for schedules. Based on François Mauriac's novel, the film depicts Tautou as a provincial housewife in 1920s France, whose suffocating marriage to a boorish landowner inspires her to a fatal bid for freedom.
Maguy Marin "Salves" & Nel Centro Reception: The Alliance will co-host a post-show reception with White Bird Dance on October 11 at 9:30pm at Nel Centro. The complimentary reception will be open to 25 persons who reserve tickets to that eSalves2vening's performance of the Compagnie Maguy Marin "Salves" show at Newmark Theatre. Also don't forget to use your membership for discounts at our 15 Les Amis partners around town!

Word Playnull: To tell someone to go left is allez à gauche, and right is à droite, but straight ahead is tout droit. . . Note that droit refers to straight, whether straight ahead (as in a direction) or vertically (il se tient bien droit). Someone who is left-handed is gaucher (Obama is gaucher) or gauchère (if feminine) but if one is clumsy, one is simply gauche or maladroit. Droit, of course, is used in many common expressions and has many meanings - visit the popular resource, wordreference.com, and consider a class at the Alliance.

Art Exhibit: Alliance staff member Meriem Elatra Bouhaddouda's paintings will be in an exhibition September 27 through December at the Westshore Building, 222 SW Pine Street in Portland. Meriem's works, in ink on watercolor paper, depict Algerian women from the late 19th century to the late 1950s, a period during which Algeria was a French department.

Public Speaking in French: In addition to 10-week classes, the Alliance occasionally offers workshops, such as the Friday, October 4 workshop on public speaking in French. Click here for details.
