Overheard en français at the Soccer Game
Alliance bulletin readers enjoyed the exhibition game on Saturday between les Matinino from Martinique and T imbers U-23 squad in a "friendly" (the visitors prevailed, 2-1). The bleachers were peppered with French speakers shouting words of encouragement to the team, and the players were also vocal, giving one Alliance student a real-time language lesson as she overheard a wide variety of interjections and commands. Click here for the transcript and here for photos of several of the teams' events involving Alliance members, such as a welcome orientation about Portland, barbecues and tours in region.

Do You Like Simenon and Maigret?
Georges Simenon was a prolific Belgian writer, most famous for his novels, des romans policiers, involving le Commisssaire Maigret. Simenon himself had a fascinating life in Paris, New York and Lausanne; his Wikipedia page gives a good overview. He wrote a total of 200 novels, many of which were adapted to film and TV (reaching a total of 171 productions). Thanks to a generous book donation to the Alliance bibliothèque, you will now find anywhere from 15-20 Simenon titles on the shelves at the Kamm House, free for loan to members. Simenon's books are also popular in Alliance classes, including the current term's Saturday literature class.
