Friday's Fête de la Musique: Summer Solstice!

The Portland Fête de la musique, now officially listed in the worldwide program of World Music Day celebrations, will bFete with playerse held this Friday in Northwest Portland at Versailles Gardens and Castaway event center. The all-ages event starts at 6:00pm and will feature catering by C'est Si Bon. Refreshments (beer, wine and soda) will be available as well. Suggested donation per person will be $2 and a raffle for $400 in prizes will be held. Soccer Match: La Martinique and Timbers U-23 

Martinique's soccer team, Les Matinino, captured the Group B title last year in the Caribbean Cup finals and earned a ticket to compete in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, July 7-23 iRudyPandFredn the United States. The team will be practicing here in Portland before their July games across the country. Portland Timbers forward Frédéric Piquionne (shown here with Rudy Manival and Pascaline Lefèbvre during a visit to the Alliance last week) was named in the preliminary roster and is looking forward to welcoming his friends to the Rose City! The public is invited to attend a friendly against the Timbers under-23 Squad on Saturday, June 29, at 7pm at Buckman Field (300 NE 12th Avenue) in NE Portland. The match is free to the public. Student Feedback, New Classes & Old Favorites  

The Spring Term student survey inspired many students to describe their favorite aspects of their French classes. Click here for the latest feedback from students. Unsure about which class to take this FrenchLearning summer? Consider the brand-new offering: Atelier Peinture, in which students will try their hand at watercolor - in French - no artistic experience necessary. Advanced classes include an evening Littérature et conversation on the novel Tristan et Iseult, the medieval love story. And, by popular demand, Beginning Phonetics will be offered once again. Says Kathryn Mascorella, Education Manager, "Phonetics was the most important French class I took in college - it helps not only with mastering the accent and intonation, but also sharpens listening comprehension." Bastille Day News - Portlanders Rock! 

Portland's Bastille Day Festival, set for July 13 in Director Park, is the only large-scale Bastille Festival on the West Coast and is WaitersRace supported by a growing number of organizations, including premium sponsors FAIS and Hardy Cognac. The event also counts Sunset AudiPerrier/Nestlé Waters USA, Virtue CiderHeathman RestaurantSt Honoré BakeryBrasserie Montmartre, C'est Si Bon, Avanti Destinations, the Heathman Hotel, the Oregonian and more, among the cash and in-kind sponsors. Generous donations from individuals and paid ads by businesses also cover event expenses - MERCI! (Click here for ad rates.) Close to 30 education and craft vendors will be represented and there will be live music all day long. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up using the short online survey. Registrations for the Portland Waiters Race are also now being accepted. Forward this link to your favorite waiter so they can sign up online for the race featuring $1000 in prize money.

Free Lecture on Women in Contemporary France, Event Photos,
New French Masters Group Organizational Meeting, and More      
  

jeannedarc Lecture on Women in Contemporary France: The Alliance will co-host a lecture as part of PSU's Tour the World at Home series, on "Women in Contemporary France" by Emilie Bonnet, Instructor at Université d'Avignon et Pays de Vaucluse, France. Free to the public; in English. Mark your calendar for Wednesday, July 31, 6:00-7:00pm, in the Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 238. Description: Women in France are multi-faceted and have played a major role in the history of the country. We shall look at the different faces of French women throughout history for context, but will focus on the 20th century women's liberation movement and the situation of French women today. Are French women really emancipated? Are they still making progress or are they going backwards? Where do we go from here?      French Public Speaking: An organizational meeting of a new French public-speaking club (tentatively called French Masters) will be held Friday, July 19, at 6:00pm at the Kamm House. The group will be targeted to participants who are either native speakers of French or who have intermediate or advanced levels, wishing to build their public-speaking skills and confidence in French. Formats, goals and potential schedules will be discussed. Click here to sign up for the meeting.

   Fascinating Facts: Did you know that the French Immersion program at the Oregon Coast in August will draw students from as far away as the East Coast? Bienvenue to Christian from Delaware. And for those wishing to travel to France for immersion: did you know that the Portland Alliance offers complimentary program overviews of the Institut de Français (near Nice)? Contact Linda Witt (lindaw@afportland.org) to schedule the 30-minute session if you are considering programs abroad.

    Paris Travel: We're getting feedback from members that they are appreciating the local connections to travel resources, that are on our newly organized Traveling in France page. Remember that Alliance members get discounted rates on many of the rentals featured.
