FETE DE LA MUSIQUE Coming in June 

La Fête de la Musique originated in France in the 1980s and has since expanded to 500 cities in over 100 countries. The slogan Faites de la musique (make music) is Fete with playersa homophone of Fête de la Musique. The family-friendly festival celebrates music of all genres as well as musicians at all levels of ability. Portland's fête will be Friday, June 21, at Castaway and Versailles Gardens in northwest Portland. A tempting menu will be offered by C'est Si Bon (a popular Farmer's Market caterer) and a wine and beer concession will be operated by the Alliance. Look for a schedule of bands shortly; if you'd like to perform (amateurs welcome!) email pascalinel@afportland.org.

Style and Taste in Early 20th Century France 
Jim Caughman, a senior executive of Kohler Company, will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, May 21 at the Heathman ASID PresentationHotel, at an event coordinated by ASID (American Society of Interior Designers). Caughman, who has an impressive resume, will speak (in English) on the topic of "Style and Taste in Early 20th Century France," exploring the changing nature of women's role in art and society in France in that period; click here for lecture details. Student Ranks 4th Nationwide in French

Alliance Française student Valerie Shoker, a fourth-grader who attends Skinner Montessori in Vancouver, recently competed in a national French contest, "le grand concours," organValerieized by the American Association of Teachers of French. More than 4,000 students nationwide participated this year, from grades 1-12; students competed against others with similar educational backgrounds for prizes. The results are in - Valerie ranked 4th nationwide! She has participated in Alliance Saturday classes and summer camps since 2011 with Jane Fabulet-Roberts, and French is a key part of the curriculum at her school, with teacher Kati Fuduli. BRAVO ET FELICITATIONS Valerie! 

Nice Living/Investing Conference in September  

Adrian Leeds is an internationally renowned property consultant who has presentNice apartmented in Portland and who regularly features her apartments in our fundraisers as well as on TV's House Hunters International. Adrian, based in Paris, will offer a seminar in Nice this September, on Living and Investing in France, featuring a full day of informative presentations by experts in many fields - including one of the Alliance's partners, Frédéric Latty of the Institut de français. A second day will feature tours of properties in Nice and a third (optional) day includes a bus tour of major attractions on the Côte d'Azur. New Volunteer Questionnaire Online  

Hundreds of volunteers from the community help out, throughout the year, with spVolParty on the Patioecial events or around the Alliance office. Soon volunteers will be needed for the music festival in June, the Bastille festival in July, and the Concours de tartes aux fruits in August. Let us know your interests and availability by filling out a questionnaire online (click here).  ThPSUReceptione PSU French Film Festival drew close to 40 people to a reception hosted (photo at left) by the Alliance on Saturday, April 27, at 5th Avenue Cinema. The festival, organized by Annabelle Dolidon of PSU, offered several excellent films to the public, for free. Alliance members also commented that they enjoyed the lively audience discussions periods, held after the films.bise1

   Combien de bises? In a recent bulletin we featured a video on the French custom of kissing on the cheek. A website has collected data on the number of "bises" by region - click here to view the site.
 Host families needed: Andeo Homestays, a local non-profit, is looking for welcoming families to host a French teen for 3-4 weandeoeks this summer. These teens have been studying English for several years. Students bring their own spending money and are covered by health insurance.   Tutor Sought: Alliance members in Beaverton are seeking a tutor for 30-45 minutes per week to spend time with their three-year-old son, tInTheHouse2o introduce him to the language. Native fluency is preferred but near-native would also be considered. Tutor will need to provide their own transportation to the family's home.    Dans la maison - "In the House" - A lucky group of 40 enjoyed the sold-out premiere screening of "Dans la maison" at Living Room Theaters last Wednesday. Film-goers described the movie as "fascinant," "excellent," and "provocant." Catch the film now at Living Room Theaters.

  Haitian Creole: Alliance member, Oregon Translation, is seeking a person who is a native speaker of Haitian Creole to assist with translation on a video editing project. The work will be paid. Contact ben@oregontranslation.com for details.

  French Immersion at the Oregon Coast: The application deadline is May 20 for the sixth annual FrenchOregonCoast immersion program at the Oregon coast, Aug. 19-24. Emphasis is on developing fluidity of expression through targeted exercises that focus on specific challenges for Anglophones.
