iHub San Joaquin Announces Inaugural H20 Hackathon Launch
Newly formed iHub hosts two-day event to focus on innovative drought solutions

The newly formed iHub San Joaquin Board
has announced plans to launch its first sponsored event - "H2O Hackathon - a water challenge" on
March 27th & 28th, 2015.

The event is a two day-long hackathon and conference that will bring together start-ups, programmers, engineers,
undergraduate and graduate students in related disciplines, farmers, urban water agency officials, business leaders, government officials, and environmentalists to solve on-the-ground challenges for using water in urban and agricultural applications as efficiently as possible.

In 2013, the State passed AB 250 creating the California Innovation Hub Program. AB 250 sets
forth iHubs as the State's premier resource for facilitating the success of entrepreneurial and small technology start-ups to grow the State's economy. In October 2013, the State designated San Joaquin County an innovation hub, making iHub SJ one of 16 iHubs in the State.
"The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors' economic development agenda and the official
establishment of iHub SJ by the State is an exciting opportunity for San Joaquin County and its
residents," said County Administrator, Monica Nino, an iHub SJ Board Member. "iHub SJ encompasses the entire San Joaquin County geographical region and is focused on an array of sectors ripe for development and growth such as health care, construction, and agribusiness
technologies. Each of these sectors identifies an area rich with entrepreneurial opportunities and the prospects of strong economic growth. The growth of these sectors will bring increased employment, opportunities and economic advantages to the County."
The H2O Hackathon was conceived by San Joaquin County entrepreneurs, business leaders,
government officials and environmental leaders who saw a need for the development of new water technology in order to contend with the impacts of severe drought.

"Water is one of California's most precious resources, and San Joaquin County is ground zero for many of the water challenges facing urban and agricultural communities throughout the State," said David Nelson, Chairman, iHub San Joaquin.

"The H2O Hackathon is a great platform for entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators to come together and create solutions for San Joaquin's most pressing water needs."
The H2O Hackathon will be held on March 27, 2015 at the Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center, 2101 Earhart Ave., Stockton, CA, and on March 28, 2015 at the Hilton Hotel Stockton, 2323 Grand Canal Blvd., Stockton, CA. Student scholarships are available. For more
information, visit: www.h2ohackathon.org.

and rough carpentry. Handling both the largest and smallest components of every project protects their clients from costly delays.

Board of Director news
In Memorium - Jerry Sperry
1931 - 2015
Gerald A. Sperry served as a member of the Partnership Board of Directors from 2001 -2008, representing  A. G. Spanos Companies.
He passed away peacefully in Stockton on January 2, 2015.
At services held last week,  friends recalled Jerry's talents as an attorney, his community support as an active member in the Elks Lodge and Rotary as well as his love of nature - especially near his retirement house in Santa Cruz.
San Joaquin Superior Court Judge Bob McNatt recounted the time when Jerry faced famed attorney Melvin Belli in a court case and won. Funny thing - Jerry never told us that story - but yet, he never did talk much about himself; he loved to talk about his dear wife Geri and his family.
According to his biography on file with the Partnership,  he was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and was admitted to the  California bar in 1962, the U. S. Supreme Court in 1970, the U.S.D.C. Eastern District of California in 1977, and in 1984 the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.  Jerry was Mendocino County Counsel from 1965-1969, District Attorney/County Counsel in Trinity County, 1969-1972, Assistant District Attorney, Santa Barbara County 1972-1974, City Attorney for Antioch, 1974-1976 and Stockton City Attorney 1976-1986.
Prior to his retirement he served as house counsel for the A. G. Spanos Companies.
During his retirement, on his many visits to Stockton, Jerry would usually stop by the Partnership offices for a cup of tea and to catch up on our activities.  He  had a quick wit, a dry sense of humor and  his visits were a welcome spontaneous fun break for staff.
McNatt shared a piece of Sperry Trivia -  Jerry had a sign on his desk that said: "Be Reasonable - do it my way."
Jerry could be sly as a fox, always called it like it was, never hedged his bets, and somewhere he is lifting his glass to us all. And here, we toast to you Jerry Sperry.
