Relocation of Weyerhaeuser Distribution Center Helps Keep Jobs in Stockton

Move to nearby location will consolidate facilities and expand capacity while maintaining existing employment levels

Over the course of the fourth quarter, Weyerhaeuser Distribution's Stockton, Calif., operations will relocate to a new site within the city, consolidating two existing facilities into a single unit. The move represents a collaboration between Weyerhaeuser Distribution, LDK Capital, and the San Joaquin Partnership to secure optimal space that will allow the building products distributor to remain within Stockton and preserve the 34 jobs in place there.

Currently, Weyerhaeuser's Northern California distribution center (DC) is divided into two facilities located about a mile apart within the Port of Stockton. The new single location will provide 150,000 square feet of operational space and 14 acres of storage; the former Heinz tomato processing plant (pictured below) is undergoing a renovation, including repaving, a new roof, a new rail spur, and a new fire system.

"Weyerhaeuser has been a part of the Stockton community since 2001, and we're thrilled to have found a new location that keeps us in the city while meeting our day-to-day needs," said George Perrault, region manager for Weyerhaeuser Distribution. "By doing so, we'll be able to retain all of our existing staff and maintain our prime central position in Northern California."

The San Joaquin Partnership, a nonprofit development organization that assists companies remaining in or moving into the Stockton region, provided logistical support to Weyerhaeuser Distribution, including site due diligence, permitting assistance, incentives analysis, and vendor referrals. "We are thrilled to have been able to help Weyerhaeuser Distribution settle into a new space that will allow it to grow and to continue to be a prominent fixture in our city," said Shelley Burcham, San Joaquin Partnership vice president of client services. She credits Tyson Vallenari, a broker with CBRE, the City of Stockton Economic Development and Community Development Departments, and Pacific Gas & Electric for being part of the team that worked on the relocation.

"Stockton offers a combination of attributes-from proximity of domestic and international hubs to a flexible business atmosphere to a high quality of life-that make it an ideal place to do business," said Mike Ammann, president & CEO of the San Joaquin Partnership.

The relocation will occur between now and the end of the year. During that time, Weyerhaeuser Distribution customers will not see a change in service or supply.

 INVESTOR HIGHLIGHT
90th birthday wishes to Alex Spanos - A. G. Spanos Companies

Alex G. Spanos celebrated his 90th birthday September 28th. It  was reportedly a quiet day with immediate family.  The son of Greek immigrants, he is a self-made billionaire - Stockton's wealthiest resident- who borrowed $800 to start a business selling sandwiches to farm workers and by 1955 had made his first million.

Spanos started his construction company in 1960 to meet local housing needs and grew it into a national multi-state builder and developer of multi-family communities, master planned communities, commercial real estate and property management. In 2005, he turned over the reins of the company to his two sons, Dean and Michael.

Today, the company, with its five-story headquarters in north Stockton, has ten regional offices between California and Florida and hundreds of employees.

A. G. Spanos Companies is a member of the San  Joaquin Partnership Board of Directors, a founding investor in 1991.

The Spanos family still owns the San Diego Chargers and Spanos was the "go to" man when local news reporters - print, radio and TV- had to find the local angle to an NFL-related question or regarding hot topics such as drug-testing ballplayers.  He was usually accessible and had a simple honest opinion.

Spanos recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary with his wife, Faye.  Family members say he's physically healthy, relaxed and happy.

LIFE AFTER

Enterprise Zones

Source: City of Stockton

Assembly Bill 93 was recently signed into law, eliminating California's Enterprise Zone program. But it's not over yet. the program will cease at the end of the year, but there is still time for businesses to take advantage of existing hiring credits. Here's what you need to know:

  • If your company has already hired employees and obtained voucher certificates through the Enterprise Zone Program, you will continue to accrue tax credits for that employee beyond the end of this year. The tax credits will continue to carry forward for up to 10 years from the end of this year.

  • If you have hired an employee but have not yet obtained a voucher certificate, you need to get a move on it! The legislation stipulates that any employees hired prior to the end of the year will still qualify for hiring credits, but it's not clear whether voucher applications will be processed after December.

  • If you are thinking of hiring new employees in the near future and would like to take advantage of the credit, it is not too late! Any employees hired before the end of the year are eligible for the existing hiring credits, and you can continue to claim the credit for as long as the employee remains with your company.
"All EZ Vouchers that are approved before the end of the year will be good for the entire five year credit period for each eligible employee," says Ed Wanket, Business Retention and Expansion Specialist for San Joaquin County Economic Development Assoc. and one of the counties Enterprise Zone Specialists.
