Community Spotlight:
Local community rallies to provide safe after-school activities for BOS students

Series Note: This summer, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD is spotlighting community partners who contribute to the success of our students through their involvement and commitment to positive programming and services. Working together, we are building a culture of excellence across the EMS ISD community!

Installment 1:  The Effie Center

During the school year, the Effie Center across from Boswell High School comes alive when the closing school bell rings. Nearly 100 BOS students flock to the free after-school hangout each day to enjoy supervised, unstructured "down" time after a rigorous day of learning.

Why they choose to spend their afternoons there may differ, but one theme remains the same - every student at the Center chooses to spend their valued personal time in a safe, drug-free environment where they build positive relationships with peers under the supportive eye of dutiful community volunteers.
Boswell incoming senior Fred Harris could have easily caught a ride home from his parents straight after school, but instead he'd rather socialize and relax with friends at the Effie Center while playing video games. "It also provides my parents with a much-needed break," he added with a grin. Similarly, Class of 2016 graduate Jonathon Tivnan, who has been going to the Center since his sophomore year, said he opted to spend his after-school time there where he feels like "he's lending a helping hand and contributing to something bigger."

The Effie Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has now been open for three years. While most of the students would tell you they are there for the free food, video games, and time to socialize with friends, what they may not realize are the subtle differences the Effie Center is making in the lives of students each day.
