Students from each of the district's three high schools will represent their schools at the 50th Anniversary State Gymnastics Championships, which will be hosted April 29-30 at EMS ISD's own Chisholm Trail High School.

The Boswell boys gymnastics team took third place at the regional meet and qualified to compete at state as a team. The BHS girls gymnastics team placed fifth overall. Freshman Julia Newell was named Regional Bars Champion, which qualifies her for state in the All Around Competition as an individual.

The Chisholm Trail boys gymnastics team took fourth place at the meet, while the girls' team took sixth overall. Juniors Joshua Garza and Dorian Rodriguez qualified for the state meet as individual competitors after placing seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Saginaw girls gymnastics team took fourth place at the regional meet. Freshman Marybel Pina qualified for the state meet as an individual in the All Around and finished eighth in the floor for the region.

The SHS boys gymnastics team performed their best meet of the year and were able to claim their first-place victory 16 points ahead of the second-place finishers. The Saginaw boys ended up winning every event at the meet, other than rings, and will compete at state as a team. They also have six students advancing to state as individuals.

Wayside Middle School sells Yuda Bands to benefit Zimbabwe orphan

In February, Wayside National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) sponsors, Kim Mays and Shawna Wilson, and NJHS student officers attended the LEAD NJHS Conference in Chicago where they learned about a service-learning project that could impact the lives of students as well as children worldwide.
The project is called, "Yuda Bands." A Yuda Band is a handmade leather and coconut bracelet from Guatemala and is derived from "aYUDA," the Spanish word for help, aid, or assistance. The project involves selling Yuda Bands to help build scholarship funds for youth in developing nations who would otherwise be unable to continue their education beyond the sixth-grade level due to financial constraints.

After the conference, Mays, Wilson, and the NJHS student officers presented the project to the students, faculty, and staff of Wayside. Together, they decided to sell the bands to benefit sixth-grade Zimbabwe orphan, Ephraim.

About our people

In February, Saginaw High School gymnastics coach Eric Briley was chosen as a "Key Influencer." A Key Influencer, as described by the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA), is an individual who helps shape the attitudes and opinions of youth in their community.

Each year, military officials from the Naval Air Station Reserve Base in Fort Worth submit four nominations of civilian leaders in the surrounding communities. The Blue Angels choose two out of the four to participate in the Blue Angels Demonstration Squadron program "Key Influencer Flights." This year, Coach Briley had the opportunity to fly with trained Blue Angel military professionals on the F/A-18 aircraft.
