Greetings!
"Do a loony-goony dance 'Cross the kitchen floor, Put something silly in the world
That ain't been there before."
~Shel Silverstein
Happy February! Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early Spring, so get ready to get outside and play. Do you play? And if so, what do you do? I have been reading quite a bit lately about the value of making time to play. Having fun and enjoying yourself with no particular goal in mind... the epitome of "the journey is the destination". It is unstructured time to enjoy and not think about work or other commitments, and they say that there are a myriad of benefits to doing so.
As children it is our job to play, and that play helps us develop into productive adults. As adults we seem to forget the importance of play and from what I have been reading it is a terrible, very bad, no-good thing to forget or devalue play time. Studies show us that adults who regularly make time to play have increased joy in their lives, reduced stress, are more creative at work and at home, build stronger relationships (especially with people they play with), can learn new things more quickly, have healthier relationships, recover from physical and emotional injuries more quickly, are more productive in general, can solve problems more quickly and effectively, and feel younger, healthier and more energetic than those who do not.
Those are each really great reasons to schedule in some play time, though when put all together it seems crazy not to give it a try, and those benefits are just the tip of the play-time iceberg!
Play can be anything you enjoy, from goofing off with friends, sharing jokes with a coworker, throwing a Frisbee on the beach, having a quick dance party wherever you are, reading for fun, playing dress-up with your kids, building a snowman in the yard, playing with a pet, a game of charades at a party, or going for a bike ride with no destination in mind. Play can be with others or by yourself. It can be anything that you enjoy!
We have all heard that laughter is the best medicine, and this seems like a natural progression of that sentiment. My mom used to get us to go outside and play by telling us we needed to 'get outside and blow the stink off', then she would shoo us out the door. Now I say that to you, and urge you to have some fun today. And let me know what you do to play, I could use some great ideas!
We can't wait to see you here!

"I will not play tug o' war. I'd rather play hug o' war. Where everyone hugs instead of tugs, Where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug, Where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone cuddles, and everyone wins."

Here is one small way:

Have you been looking for that perfect hiking companion? Are you missing cuddles and kisses during Sunday Netflix marathons on your couch? Are you ready for love? There is no excuse to be lonely this Valentine's Day--there is plenty of love waiting for you at Kitsap Humane Society where they can help you find your perfect match!
On Saturday and Sunday, February 13 and 14, go to KHS for the "Ready for Love" adoption event from noon to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday you can celebrate with our pizza!
There will be animals available for adoption of all different ages, sizes and breeds--come meet your next sweetheart! Staff and volunteer adoption counselors will be on hand to help visitors find the right match for their home and lifestyle.
To help you find your furry Valentine, they will be offering the following discounted adoption fees:
- Pick your own adoption price for adult cats
- 1/2 off dogs that have been in the shelter for more than 14 days.
They say you can't buy love, but you can adopt it! Check out a few eligible bachelors and bachelorettes and start day dreaming about your furry soul-mate.
After all, everybody needs a little help now and then...
