May 2015
Greetings!

You will not often find me quoting baseball players, though this month, this quote hits it out of the park, so to speak. We have a big announcement, are you ready?

Sharon is retiring.

I'll let that sink in for a bit. Take your time with it, I know I've had to. Yes, we're having a party, there is more about that in the 'What's Happening' section below, as well as the "How Can I Help" section after that.

We have been blessed to enjoy her beautiful, smiling face and wonderful laugh nearly every weekday morning for the past nine years, and for those of you who visited the business that was here prior to ours, it has been as many as 16 years.
Many of you know her from past jobs around the community, always serving people and always with joy. The rest of you probably know her from within the horse community, she is very active and loves her horses, and all animals.

I would not have been as successful as I have been in this place without her counsel and steadfast loyalty; I owe her more appreciation and gratitude than I am capable of showing.

Sharon is not one to enjoy bringing attention to herself, she was very reluctant to agree to a celebration about her. So I explained that it is not only about her. It is about all of us having an opportunity to shower her with love and affection in a way that surpasses the every day. It is about us being able to wish her well and thank her for all she has done for us, been to us, and has taught us, as well as to honor her, and her relationships with us. It is for all of you to be able to stop by and hug her and feel the love that she exudes. It is our chance to show our respect for the transition that this life is, especially right now. To eulogize her where she can see, hear and feel the power her loving heart has created around us!

She won't be disappearing, we will still see her around town and certainly around here on occasion, after all, she is joining our family of customers, and she has promised to help us out if we really need her over the next few months. Yet it will not be the same as looking forward to her every day.

And while I am a little doleful and apprehensive around missing her, I am so happy that she is making this transition because she wants to! She is choosing to have the time to do the things she wants to do, and that is what we are all working so hard for in the first place! She has earned every bit of happiness she can get and we are excited for her future, as well as ours, and to see what is going to happen next. I hope you all can come to the party!

We can't wait to see you here!

~Monica

Monthly Fun at Monica's:
ON THE THIRD THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH
MONICA'S IS HAVING A COMMUNITY PARTY FOR YOU!
Where other communities have an art walk, we want to offer a different kind of event that is for YOU to have FUN, feel NOURISHED in many ways, and maybe even LEARN something if you want to!
Variety is the spice of life, so each party will be different.
It may feature local art and/or artists, local books and/or authors, local food, cooking, music, wine, beer, games,
profile community members, other businesses, or anything else that strikes our fancy!

These events are a way for us to say 'Thanks!' to you for choosing to spend your time, money and energy with us.

We will give some things away, offer perks that we think you'll enjoy, and even try some new recipes for you to test.
We'll even trade you a cookie for your donations of non-perishable food, toiletries, clothing, household items etc...

and make sure those donations get to the food bank and local homeless outreach programs.

So stop in on the Third Thursday and see what we've got cooking!

Thursday May 21, 4-7 pm
Sharon's retirement AND our 9th anniversary!
We are excited to celebrate with YOU, Sharon has requested that we make pizza, of course there will be cake, and other goodies, along with wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks. We have lined up a musician, some artists (keep reading below this) and a really fun evening.

Also that evening Upstairs: we are hosting an art show put on by local teachers!
""Impressions" is the theme for this year's "Teachers as Artists" Art show displayed at Monica's Bakery and Cafe in Old Town Silverdale during the month of May 2015. The exhibit features original art work by art educators and retired art educators from Central Kitsap School District and North Kitsap School District.

Nature, seasonal changes, the environment, design elements, culture, music are themes you will view throughout this show. The art show is stylistically diverse featuring realism, contemporary abstract concepts, surrealism, pop-culture and digital photography. A variety of traditional mediums, mixed media, natural and organic materials are used in creative ways to portray the artists' themes.

The beautiful art images portrayed are reflections how each artist views particular moments and experiences. The artists' statements and Haiku will help engage you with their inspiration and process."

Their work is beautiful and while we have the walls filled now, they will bring more for the show that evening.

You may be thinking "How can I help?"
Here is one small way:

In honor of Sharon we will accept donations at our 3rd Thursday event to benefit:

"A primary element of the mission of Horse Harbor Foundation is... to rehabilitate and provide a sanctuary for mistreated and neglected horses... and educate both current and potential horse owners to properly care for and use them. We believe that the more people who know about proper horse care and can share that knowledge, the more horses will be saved from mistreatment, abuse, or the slaughterhouse before a problem even arises. The number of horses in need is staggering, and organizations like the Foundation are few in number. Horse care requires a lot of time and energy, but it can be done right.

Horse Harbor Foundation offers a variety of programs, and there are many ways to get involved. These opportunities include year-round riding lessons to student members and week-long summer day camps for interested youngsters. The major emphasis of both educational programs is to teach responsible horse ownership, which includes horse health and proper care and keep. The Foundation's goal is to train not only competent riders but also competent horse owners. The day camps are designed to give a hands-on introduction to the world of horses, including riding, grooming, handling, and first aid. Periodically, we also host seminars and clinics open to the public, which cover various topics of horse stewardship.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
* Sign up for riding lessons
* Attend a clinic
* Volunteer in our program
* Sign up your child for our summer day camps
* Sponsor one of the Foundation's rescued horses
* Make a tax-deductible donation:

Your contributions and dues go directly to the care and keep of the herd!
