Monica & Mark Downen,

at your service

  April 2014

Greetings!

"In My Garden
A bear comes dancing every Friday
Gathering honey into jars,
Kangaroos leap,
Monkeys nibble on peanuts,
Queen Ruth sips tea under vines
With Xavier's young zebra."

~Shel Silverstein

Magical things happen in our local gardens and while we don't grow everything from A to Z here, what we do have available is wonderful. I am so excited because it's farmer's market season again! Saturday April 5 Port Orchard and Poulsbo both open, and the rest will follow over the next 2 months. We have links to them all on our web site HERE.

As always I will post "Meet me at the Market" on Twitter and Facebook whenever I can visit one, noting which market and what time I will get there. The first person to find me will win a prize: I will purchase something unique from one of our local farmers or vendors for you, and give you a recipe or method of preparation for it. Everyone who finds me can come along with me to meet our farmers; I could play at the market all day, though I don't usually have all day to play.

In other news, I was unable to get a newsletter out last month primarily due to the fact that I broke our web site. Please know that if I am ever unable to get a newsletter out, or it is later in the month than the first, you just bring in the most recent newsletter and you will get your birthday meal, don't worry about that!

I'm sure you noticed that our building-mate Heart has consolidated down to their one store on Bainbridge. We don't know who will be leasing the other half of our building, though we hope it will be someone we can collaborate with. Unfortunately the costs involved with expanding to the entire building are quite prohibitive, from the $3000 per month rent, to furnishing, tenant improvements, etc. It is really out of our reach in spite of the fantasizing that I have been doing about it. It would be wonderful to have an on-site office and storage, never mind more seating, more bathrooms and better teaching space!

We owe all you readers of West Sound Home & Garden a huge THANK YOU! You voted us the best deli sandwich, which is completely awesome! Even more fabulous, in fact maybe my favorite award ever, is that you voted us your FAVORITE BUSINESS. It is always our goal to be your favorite, and it means the world to us that you told us we are.

Thank YOU very much!

There are lots of goings-on listed below, I hope you get some time to get out and enjoy this beautiful place we call home.

We can't wait to see you here!

~Monica

"I will not play tug o' war. I'd rather play hug o' war. Where everyone hugs instead of tugs, Where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug, Where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone cuddles, and everyone wins."

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

You may be thinking "How can I help?"
Here is one small way:

We are super excited and very proud to join the family of SUSPENDED COFFEE. We learned about this project thanks to our former team member Alycia and we are all looking forward to getting the program started.

The simple gist is that anyone who wants to can purchase an extra cup of coffee (or anything at all from the cafe) and we will put a token that represents the purchase in a box. Anyone who needs it can then use the token to get that cup of coffee (or whatever was purchased).

Check out the web site HERE and be sure to watch the video, it is really nice.

We have 'applied' to the program and Alfred is making some prototypes of tokens for us, so we should be up and running with it by Easter at the latest. We can't wait to see what you do with this, because together we can make our world a better place!

After all, everybody needs a little help now and then.
