Monica & Mark Downen,

at your service

January 2014
Greetings!

"Birds are flyin' south for winter. Here's the Weird-Bird headin' north, Wings a-flappin', beak a-chatterin',

Cold head bobbin' back 'n' forth. He says, "It's not that I like ice Or freezin' winds and snowy ground. It's just sometimes it's kind of nice To be the only bird in town."

~Shel Silverstein

Business has died down so much since Christmas Eve it does feel a bit like being the only bird in town.

We always know it's January when everyone is recovering from the holidays, staying in and being 'good'. Our hours are a bit shorter until business picks up again, as it is pretty quiet around here. We hope you are resting and rejuvenating

your spirit, we all need to do that now and again.

I am a big believer in 'new beginnings' and sometimes each day is a new beginning for me. This year I am learning to embrace my natural tendencies as an introvert
(I know many of you may be surprised at that notion, though I really am more of an introvert)
rather than battle them. This month I am trying to create new habits to help me be more productive and yet work a little less. And every day, each time I 'fail' at something, I am going to get better at showing myself some compassion. After all, we should treat ourselves at least as well as we treat our friends and family, right?
We all have challenges and I hope that you also find that each day (sometimes each hour!) is an opportunity for a new beginning.

As January moves towards February and the weather deters you remember: the weather usually won't stop us from serving you! We almost always make it in, even in the snow, and we rarely lose power in Old Town.  If it's a snow day and you know any emergency workers, including police, fire, power company, road crew, dispatchers and more, let them know that we offer free hot coffee, cocoa or cider for those who work to help the rest of us survive the worst weather days.

We can't wait to see you here!

~Monica

"I will not play tug o' war. I'd rather play hug o' war. Where everyone hugs instead of tugs, Where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug, Where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone cuddles, and everyone wins."

~Shel Silverstein

GO HAWKS!

Mark and Jason are going to be busy decorating  12th man shortbread cookies for the great playoff games! We will have them out the day before and the day of the games, while they last. If you want to be sure to get some be sure to pre-order and we will have them for you. Otherwise we know they will go quickly! They will be green and blue and have '12' or 'GO HAWKS' on them, and if you preorder you can request whatever you like!

Here is a secret just for you: Mark has made a few giant football shaped cookies and decorated them for super-fans. They MUST be pre-ordered and they cost $40, and could easily be enjoyed by a couple dozen people.

Our Cooking Class this month sold out quickly!

But don't worry, we will be offering another one  soon and the waiting list will get first priority. The next class will be Pizza, since that was so popular, the details will be in the newsletter next month.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

~Dr. Seuss

You may be thinking "How can I help?"
Here is one small way:

You probably got some new things over the holidays... and need to make room for the new things. Or perhaps you decorated for the holidays and when it was time to put everything away you realized you didn't want all the 'stuff' out that you had before. If it's time to de-clutter your space, feel free to bring in whatever you don't need and we will make sure it gets to those who do need it.

Clean and gently used clothing, household items, toiletries, jewelry for job interviews, bus passes, camping gear, student backpacks, shoes, coats, personal hygiene items, gift certificates you'll never use, prepaid phone cards, stamps, flashlights, batteries, and on and on it goes.

Our neighbors in need can use everything, especially in the cold of Winter, and we love being able to get things to them. All you have to do is drop it off here and we will take care of the rest. And don't forget that hundreds of our children are in need of our help, and they are not proud of that fact. We can all be their heroes by giving them the school supplies and daily items that we no longer need or use.

After all, everybody needs a little help now and then.
