Greetings!
"If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me."
~Led Zeppelin
Mark, my favorite husband in the world, the man I love more each day than I did the last, my partner in life, our baker, is turning 50 this month, and you are invited to the party! The details are listed below so that you can join us in the celebration, and I really hope that you will!
Last month Mark and I went up to Vancouver Island for a much needed retreat and we had a fabulous time. We hiked, kayaked, relaxed and reconnected in ways that we have not done in a very long time. This trip was mainly possible due to the generosity of a particular friend who let us borrow his vacation home up there, and there are not enough ways to say thank you for that. It was also possible because we have the best team in the world and a wonderful house-sitter. While I may have had some stress over leaving for a week, not one bit of it was worry about them or the way they would handle things.
I love being surrounded by wonderful people!
Our trip reminded me of just how important it is to completely disconnect from the world while connecting with your self and/or someone you love. We did not have a television on for 10 days, and we did not look at media of any kind while we were away. We played cards in the evening and listened to music; I did not miss the world one bit. I encourage you to completely disconnect once in awhile, even if it's just for a day. I guarantee it will be good for your mind, body and spirit, not to mention your stress levels. The next time you come in I would love to hear about what you do to take time out and recharge your cells.
We can't wait to see you here!
~Monica

Get Your Vote On!
While I am sure there were celebrations, I remember only one event from my 18th birthday: I registered to vote. There was no online registration in 1985, or I might have used our Commodore 64 to do so. It was a sunny Tuesday and I rode my bike down to the tiny library in the Cascade Vista neighborhood, because it was the closest King County branch to us. It was about 2 miles away with a couple of huge hills to navigate, though my red 10-speed was used to getting me there.
I have always loved going to the library; I was a bit nervous and very excited when I walked in-and you must realize that this tiny building was about the size of a book mobile- far smaller than our little Silverdale branch. I told the librarian that it was my 18th birthday and I was there to register to vote. She explained that I would be eligible to vote in the next election, though my first presidential election would not come for 3 more years..
I could hardly wait!
Every time there was an election I got up early or, if I was on the night shift, I would go after work and make sure that my voice was counted. Now that I mail in my vote there is much less pomp and circumstance and the occasion is more subtle. However I still set aside a particular time, and I like being able to peruse the voter's pamphlets and refer to my notes as I vote with no line of waiting voters behind me.
I feel like voting is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, our community and our country. I hope that you will take your vote seriously as well; we need everyone's voice to be counted.
