Greetings!
A hippo sandwich is easy to make. All you do is simply take: One slice of bread, One slice of cake, Some mayonnaise, One onion ring, One hippopotamus, One piece of string, A dash of pepper-- That ought to do it. And now comes the problem... Biting into it!
~Shel Silverstein
Greetings and welcome to 2013! The age of smart phones and smart tvs, wireless everything, ipads, ipods, iphones, computers in cars, id tags embedded in pets, and a zillion other 'conveniences' allowed us by technology. And yet so much technology can be one of the biggest time wasters, and certainly trying to set it all up and keep it running smoothly is enough to make me go mad with frustration.
I must admit that we really value the simpler things around here, exemplified by the fact that our foods are artisanal and we do not have a bunch of fancy machines or ready-made products to help us make it all. We think we can teach you to appreciate and make some great food like we do, for yourself.
Mark and I are offering hands-on cooking classes and we are pretty excited about this. We have helped teach classes at the O.C. culinary program, we teach our staff all the time, and we co-teach classes in Italy as well. We have done a few 'demonstration' style classes on outings and special events which we have hosted, though not the
hands-on style that we do in Italy.
When we were in Italy this past October one of our travel companions, Shannon Childs, encouraged me on many occasions to take my ideas for classes and make them into reality, and I took that challenge. I created a pizza making class and it sold out zippity quick!
Then we were asked to host a private pasta making class for the HR team at the Doctor's Clinic, one of our favorite routine catering clients, and we jumped at the chance. Next month (read below) that same pasta class is available to all of you, and we already only have 4 spots left! I am truly inspired by your passion for great food and hands-on fun!
I have come up with a fun list of classes that we wish to offer and I will announce them as they come up each month, in this newsletter, on the web site and on Facebook. I doubt we will be able to do many in the Summer since our days get filled very quickly with catering weddings, other celebrations and parties, though we will have them as often as we can for as long as you all keep signing up.
As always we welcome your ideas and requests! Each class will include discussions on things like stocking your pantry, important kitchen tools, cookbooks we love, the importance of quality over quantity, and so much more! PLUS there will be opportunities to taste specialty ingredients (like premium olive oil) and compare them with their run-of-the-mill counterparts. And of course we will serve a little wine, because we think that makes a meal better, but you are not required to drink it if you prefer something else! If you want to book a private class we can do that too and we would even entertain the idea of offering a class in your home or clubhouse.
Let us know what we can do for you!
We can't wait to see you here!
~Monica

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."
~Dr. Seuss | | You may be thinking "How can I help?" Here is one small way:
Clear out the clutter and make room for all your new gifts!
Most of you know we take donations all the time for our neighbors in need, often focusing on our wine tastings, art walks and other special events to remind you of this. Since the holidays are over and cleanup is (mostly) finished, this is a great opportunity for you to get rid of those old things you don't want or need anymore, and get them to someone who very much does.
We can really find great homes for items for babies, kids and adults alike:
Clean and gently used clothing (everything including coats/hats/gloves/socks/shoes/scarves/shirts/pants dresses/stockings/cold-weather under garments/ t-shirts/onesies/pajamas/new bras and underwear/ anything else anyone could wear to school, to work, out and about, etc...)
Toiletries (toothpaste/toothbrushes/combs/brushes/ soap/lotion/razors for men or women/shaving cream/ pantiliners and other feminine products/shampoo/ conditioner/barrettes for girls, etc...)
Laundry Soap
Bus Passes
Ferry Passes
Prepaid Phone Cards
Prepaid Gas Cards
small propane cannisters for camp stoves
blankets
sleeping bags
dried and canned food items
protein bars
backpacks
diapers
baby wipes
formula
school supplies
batteries
flashlights
rain gear
camping equipment
pots/pans/dishes/utensils and any other kitchen items
household items
and maybe you want to get rid of some gift certificates to places you wouldn't go: grocery or department stores, restaurants, etc...
And absolutely anything else that you no longer need, would throw away or take to goodwill, or just have a surplus of, is really needed by someone out there. We will get it to them, all you have to do is drop it off.
Thank you for caring; everyone needs a little help once in a while.
