Monica & Mark Downen,

at your service

October 2012
Greetings!

(Leading Italian composer of opera in the 19th century)

Buon Giorno! Mark and I leave for Italy late this week and we are so excited to host another fabulous group as we explore the foods, wines, culture and history of Tuscany and Umbria. My goal is to have internet connectivity while I am there (wish me luck!) and I will be updating the blog as often as I can. I hope you will follow along and join in the adventure as we explore a small part of this beautiful country!

We are so lucky to have a great team who will be taking care of everything from our home to our business, while we are gone. They can keep you updated about our trip as well, and of course they will be busy making and serving delicious food as always while we are travelling.
We won't be gone long, and when we get back we will have a party and show you pictures and show off some of what we learn in our different cooking classes while we are there.

I am already looking forward to coming home and sharing what we learn with all of you. While we cannot take everyone with us, I sure hope you have a little adventure of your own this month! There are lots of great things to see and do, just a few of which are listed below. Get out there and explore a little and we will see you very soon!

We can't wait to see you here!

~Monica

You may be thinking "How can I help?"
Here is one small way:

"Kits for Kids" for Project Connect
Organize your neighbors, church, school or other group to fill hygiene kits and food bags for our children in need.
Our goal is to make up at least 300 kits in time to give out at this year's Continuum of Care Coalition Project Connect, scheduled for Wednesday, January 23, 2013.

Individuals and group organizations are very welcome to donate. Please put a sticker on the front of the bag with your organization's name and a list of its contents.
We'd like to have them all in by 12/7 so we know if there are any additional we need to come up with. If you or your favorite organization can take on doing any amount, Drop them off at Monica's and we will get them delivered to our children in need. Below is an example of a nice bag to put together, for about $5 from the Dollar Store.

All these items are at the Dollar Store.

In a gallon Ziploc bag:

1 small child's flashlight w/batteries (needed for homework - a necessity)

1 6" x 6" plain or colored paper book for artwork

1 sheet stickers

1 box 8 Crayolas

1 box flashcards, any kind

1 child toothbrush and 1 paste/gel

1 comb

1 granola or breakfast bar.

 What is Project Connect?
An event to match the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless with services. Kitsap Continuum of Care Coalition hosts Project Connect in conjunction with the state required Homeless Point in Time Count that it also organizes. The event costs about $4,000 to organize, and they can always use volunteers.
This is an uplifting event that provides essential services and supplies to more than 650 attendees each year.
