2016 Excellence in Business Awards

Join us as we honor the accomplishments of local businesses with the 2016 Excellence in Business Awards. This award recognizes a business that consistently demonstrated outstanding performance, growth, staying power, innovation and proven leadership in the community.
The Chamber is excited to announce the following companies have been named as 2015 Excellence in Business Award recipients:
  • Laudan Properties
  • Pritt Entertainment Group
  • Securitec One, Inc.
  • USA Firmware - Emerging Business Award
Please note, due to unforeseen circumstances, Jeff Hoffman will be unable to deliver the keynote speech as previously scheduled.  The Greater Akron Chamber is pleased to welcome Men's Head Basketball Coach at The University of Akron, Keith Dambrot.  Dambrot's motivation for success is different than most head coaches at the Division I level. His commitment has seen the Akron basketball program grow into one of the top mid-majors in the nation. This drive doesn't stem from thoughts of career stepping stones, but from his allegiance to his hometown and alma mater.

Corporate tables of eight (8) are available for $350.  The price includes table signage, recognition in the event program and MS-PowerPoint presentation.

Lunch & Learn: How to Comply with the New Overtime Exemption Rules Without Paying More

Do you know that overtime rules will likely be changing?

If you have exempt employees being paid less than $913 a week ($47,476 annually), new overtime exemption rules being finalized will affect you.

The new rules will be effective as of December 1, 2016, and will mean that all salaried employees - regardless of their professional, managerial or administrative responsibilities - must be paid at least $47,476 annually or equivalent to $22.83 per hour or they will be entitled to overtime.

If that prospect seems daunting to your budget for salaried personnel, learn more about the new rules and how to minimize their impact on your workplace with Attorney Karen C. Lefton of The Lefton Group, LLC.

The Morning Buzz

SummaCare Sponsored by SummaCare

The Morning Buzz, sponsored by SummaCare, is a monthly speaker breakfast series which aims to connect small and medium size businesses by facilitating the exchange of ideas and strategies for business growth and success.

Join us to hear Deborah Easton present on "Generations in the Workplace."

Have you ever wondered why a person of another generation did something you would never think of doing?  Have you received customer service from another generation and didn't feel it was actually service?  Does your definition of work ethic seem to clash with others' definitions?
If you have experienced a clash of generations, you won't want to miss this humorous and enlightening explanation of the "biases of experience" that create these misunderstandings.  Deborah Easton's portrayals of each generation's point of view provide insights and subtleties that other generational training programs do not offer.

Morning Buzz Deborah Easton, an internationally-known trainer and coach for over thirty years and owner of Easton Consulting, has presented the training program "Generations in the Workplace" to hundreds of audiences of varying industries including health care, manufacturing, banking, insurance, social services, technology and numerous professional organizations.  The program's emphasis is the universal need of all generations for respect, although each generation defines respect in its own way.  Numerous aspects of this topic -- coaching generations, generational definitions of "good customer service," accountability among generations and preparing for Gen Z, etc. -- can be incorporated into the training depending on the client's needs.

2016 Managed Care Organization (MCO) Open Enrollment - May 2 through May 27, 2016

BWC has announced that the 2016 MCO Open Enrollment period will be held from May 2, 2016, to May 27, 2016. Current CareWorks customers need not do anything during the MCO Open Enrollment, they will be automatically re-enrolled with CareWorks.

Every two years, the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) provides employers an opportunity to evaluate the performance of their current MCO. MCOs are responsible for the medical management of workplace injury claims, including initial injury reporting, assisting with medical treatment, paying medical bills and helping achieve successful return to work outcomes.

If an employer feels they are not receiving an appropriate level of service, every other year they have the opportunity during the month of May to make a change in their MCO. Once an open enrollment period ends, an employer's MCO selection will stand for the next two years. Employers opting not to change MCOs will automatically remain with their current MCO for the next two years.  While employers do not directly pay for the services of their MCO, there are several MCO responsibilities that can impact the premium employers pay to BWC.

The Greater Akron Chamber highly recommends you enroll with Careworks during the 2016 MCO Open Enrollment . This is a time when employers should be asking some core questions about their current MCO, including:
  • Does my MCO make it easy to report new claims?
  • Does my MCO provide injury reporting packets?
  • Does my MCO assist with identifying initial treating providers so my injured employees can receive quality medical treatment with a return to work focus?
  • Does my MCO provide online access to claims information and documents?
  • Does my MCO process medical bills timely and accurately?
  • Does my MCO collaborate with me and my Third Party Administrator (TPA) to ensure successful claim outcomes?
CareWorks is the endorsed MCO of the Greater Akron Chamber and currently provides all of the above services to many Greater Akron Chamber members. CareWorks assists their clients with their workers' compensation claims by customizing their services around the unique needs of each individual client. CareWorks is the most selected Ohio MCO, representing approximately one-third of all claims filed with BWC in 2015. Their experience across all industries puts them in a unique position to properly manage claims and create positive outcomes.
Source: BWC 2015 MCO Report Card and public information request received from BWC on 1/20/2016 providing totals of all claims filed with BWC with date of injury in 2015, compared to CareWorks data showing claims reported for same period.

From establishing good reporting practices to making personal visits to physicians to discuss difficult claims, CareWorks works diligently to assist their clients with reducing the negative impact of workers' compensation claims.

For employers not currently with CareWorks, this is an opportunity to evaluate MCOs and make a choice that is best for their business.  Please contact CareWorks toll free at 1 (888) 627-7586 or visit them online at www.careworksmco.com for additional information.
