2015 State of the City Address by Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic

Mayor Plusquellic Co-sponsored by the Greater Akron Chamber, Rotary Club of Akron, Kiwanis Club of Akron and Akron Press Club and Hosted by the Akron Roundtable

 

In this annual event, the Honorable Mayor Donald L. Plusquellic presents the municipal achievements of 2014 and talk about current and future issues and projects.
 
In 2011, Plusquellic was re-elected to a seventh term and is currently in his 29th year as Mayor of the City of Akron. The city's longest-serving mayor is a life-long resident of Akron. He became the 59th Mayor of Akron in January 1987, after serving with distinction for 13 years on Akron City Council, including three years as President from 1984-1987. Citizens of Ward 9 first elected him to Council as their representative in 1973, when he was 24 years old.

Mayor Plusquellic has devoted more than 40 years to public service in a career highlighted by great leadership successes locally and nationally. A graduate of Akron's Kenmore High School, Plusquellic attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering and graduated from Bowling Green State University School of Business. He earned his J.D. from The University of Akron School of Law. Plusquellic has won countless local and national awards; most recently he was honored for his support of the arts and culture, receiving the National 2014 Public Leadership in the Arts Award.

Nominations Sought for 2015 Excellence in Business Awards
 
The Greater Akron Chamber is accepting nominations for our 2015 Excellence In Business Award.  Nominate a company who deserves recognition for the exceptional work they do in the business community.

To be considered, the company must be for-profit and non-publicly traded.  See additional criteria on the nomination form.  The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 20, 2015.

The 30 for the Future program recognizes 30 young professionals (ages 25-39) who live and/or work in the Greater Akron Region, who are trendsetters in their industries and who make an impact on the region through dynamic leadership and community service.

Nominations will be accepted through Friday, March 27, 2015. Please don't wait!  Nominate a qualified individual today!

The 2015 30 for the Future award recipients will be recognized at an awards ceremony on September 3, 2015. More information about the ceremony will be shared in the coming months.

Talent, Innovation and Leadership: the focus of the Advance Greater Akron strategic plan is gaining momentum as we work together to create a better quality of life for everyone. 

Your input is needed for one of the more visible collaborative initiatives within the region - the new Akron Bits and Atoms Innovation Center, a program of the award-winning and nationally-recognized Akron Global Business Accelerator, the Center will be a state-of-the-art regional entrepreneurial development center that guides entrepreneurs through the company-building process. It will be focused on the building of technology, artistic ideas, products and companies that will ultimately create more jobs for the Akron area. This new Center will allow any person to create a business or make a product through collaboration and learning. The main offerings of the Center are AkronWorks, a collaborative co-working space, and the MakerSpace, a workspace providing high capital equipment for prototyping and small scale manufacturing.  The Center will also offer general courses and presentations on entrepreneurship.
