Knowledgeable Network of Women (KNOW) Luncheon
|
Sponsored by Paula R. Chesser/R. W. Baird
Join us for the next quarterly luncheon when E. L. "Betsy" Smith, Ph.D. presents, "Power Plays for Women: Get What You Want, Need and Deserve."
According to the US Bureau of Labor:
- Projections show that of the 10 fastest growing occupations between the 2004-14 period, women already comprise the majority in 7 of these occupations. This fact suggests that women will continue to find jobs in growth occupations.
-
Women comprised 46.8 percent of the total U.S. labor force and are projected to account for 46.9 percent of the labor force in 2018. - Women are projected to account for 51.2 percent of the increase in total labor force growth between 2008 and 2018.
- The largest percentage of employed women (41 percent) worked in management, professional, and related occupations; 32 percent worked in sales and office occupations; 21 percent in service occupations; 5 percent in production, transportation, and material moving occupations; and 1 percent in natural resources, construction, and maintenance occupations.
Women are making historical progress in the work world and yet they do not acknowledge or exercise their power. Even high level professional women struggle with overcoming adversity, leadership, flexibility/balance, mentoring, negotiation skills and authenticity. In this interactive presentation, Dr. Smith will cover strategies to address these challenges for professional women.

Energy News Update from Chamber Energy Solutions (CES) Chamber Energy Solutions wants to keep its customers updated on the current electric market conditions which may impact your future electric costs. You may have heard in the news that Northern Ohio generators are planning to shut down a portion of their coal-powered generation capacity to comply with EPA regulations. This capacity limitation in FirstEnergy market and the general increase in capacity in AEP Ohio, DP&L and Duke will negatively affect your electric rates over the next couple of years by increasing the generation capacity charges.
Electricity is a commodity that cannot be economically stored in large quantities; it must be consumed as it is generated. Therefore, sufficient electricity supply must be available to meet the demand on any given area's electric grid at any given moment. The supply necessary to meet these ongoing demands is known as capacity. In simpler terms, capacity is the amount of electricity needed to keep the lights on in your community regardless of the demands on the system. Contact Debbie Richmond, via fax at (330) 379-3164 or e-mail to richmond@greaterakronchamber.org for details on how the capacity increase may affect your business.
As we encounter the winter heating season, it is time to evaluate your energy costs and how the current natural gas rates will affect your budget. An earlier start to winter-like temperatures has the natural gas market trading slightly higher over past three weeks. Although the market has an abundant supply of natural gas, the colder start to November may have set the stage for higher pricing this winter when compared to the previous two winters. Forecasts for the next one to three months do not suggest any extreme variations from average winter time temperatures. The natural gas market is dependent upon the weather; therefore, any significant and prolonged cold spells will force the market pricing up, and below average temperatures will have the opposite effect. The CES Program takes all these factors into account when making decisions for your accounts and makes every effort to secure competitive rates for our Chamber members.
