The Greater Akron Chamber's Board of Directors passed resolutions of support and endorsement of the following issues on the November 5, 2013, general election ballot:
- Issue #1 -- County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health (ADM) Board levy renewal

Issue #2 -- Metro Parks, Serving Summit County levy renewal

Issue #3 -- Akron Zoo levy renewal

Issue #4 -- A proposed charter amendment allowing the City of Akron to donate the city's steam and chilled water system to Akron Children's Hospital
"As a regional economic development organization, the Greater Akron Chamber is the voice of the business community. We encourage our members to promote the importance of voting to their employees and educate them on the ballot issues as voting is a right and the ultimate expression of our freedom," said Chamber president Daniel C. Colantone.

Akron Only Chamber in Ohio to Receive IEDC Accreditation
|
Joining an elite group of only 36 accredited economic development groups in the U.S., the Greater Akron Chamber has been named an Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO) by IEDC, the International Economic Development Council, the largest association of economic and community development professionals in the world. The Chamber is the first organization in Ohio to receive this accreditation.
According to IEDC President and CEO Jeff Finkle, "The Greater Akron Chamber displays the professionalism, commitment and technical expertise that is deserving of this honor." The AEDO program is a highly competitive comprehensive peer review process and industry "gold standard," measuring economic development organizations against standards of the profession. "I've seen the Chamber's leadership in local job creation, attraction, retention and capital investment. This is another critical piece of the puzzle to advancing our regional economy," said Congressman Tim Ryan. |

On Friday, November 15, CAPTRUST's chief investment officer Eric J. Freedman, will present "Where Are We Heading?" an insight into the issues of the day and how they may impact the global markets, our economy and your business. Freedman is responsible for asset allocation research and tactical decision-making for CAPTRUST.
The event also features The University of Akron's Dr. John C. Green, the director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics. Green will highlight the economic impact of current U.S. government policies and operations. The Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics is a bipartisan research and teaching institute dedicated to the nuts and bolts of practical politics.

Chamber Receives Two Awards for 2012 Economic Development
|
The Greater Akron Chamber and its partners were honored on October 8 by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The Chamber and the City of Akron received a Silver Excellence in Economic Development Award for East End Development (formerly called Riverwalk), the construction of the new Goodyear North American and Global Headquarters and redevelopment of the former Goodyear campus.
In addition, the Chamber received a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award for its Greater Akron Partnership project, the Chamber's business retention and expansion program. The Partnership is a business-friendly program that acts as a "one-stop shop" to assist local companies with their economic development needs.
In 2012, the Partnership reached a milestone of 500 business visitations during the calendar year. Over 3,000 visitations have been conducted since the program was launched.

Chamber and FirstEnergy Make Market Visit To New York City

The Greater Akron Chamber with FirstEnergy visited New York City as part of its annual market visit to promote the Akron region. Over the past several years as part of a domestic marketing effort, the Chamber has scheduled meetings with national corporate real estate executives and site selectors based in New York and New Jersey. In meetings with KPMG, Angelo Gordon, Newmark Grubb Knight Frank, Merrill Lynch and Wadley Donovan Gutshaw, several leads have been developed.
"Partnering with the Greater Akron Chamber on market visits is a great way of getting our team in front of key decision- makers who appreciate our reaching out to them on their home turf," stated Melissa Frank, senior economic executive for FirstEnergy. "We are already working with the Chamber on our market visit to New York in 2014."

Chamber to Attend MEDICA Show in Germany
|
For the third consecutive year, the Greater Akron Chamber and the City of Akron have collaborated to represent Akron at the MEDICA Trade Show. MEDICA, the world's largest medical marketplace, takes place November 20 - 23 in Dusseldorf, Germany. In 2012, MEDICA attracted 135,000 attendees from 120 different countries.
The Akron team will meet with companies looking to establish or expand into the North American marketplace. Our participation at MEDICA in 2011 and 2012 led to more than 75 meetings, 35 top-tier leads and several international delegation visits to Akron. "MEDICA has proven to be one of the most important trade shows--domestic or international--that we exhibit at," stated Samuel DeShazior, deputy planning director for the City of Akron. "Akron's BioMedical Corridor, Austen BioInnovation Institute and the entire medical cluster are strengthened by the relationships cultivated at shows like MEDICA."
