YPN Nights: Discover Downtown Kent

YPs are invited to Discover Downtown Kent for the next YPN Nights event! Downtown Kent has gone through many exciting changes in the last few years and have added cool, unique businesses to the area. The event agenda is as follows:
  • 5:30 p.m. - Meet at McKay Bricker Framing on Main St. - Learn more about the recent and future Downtown Kent developments from Heather Malarcik, Main Street Kent, as you enjoy complimentary wine, soda, cheese and crackers in the gallery adjacent to McKay Bricker Framing.
  • 6:15 p.m. - Walk to Laziza on Erie St. - Observe some of the local businesses Kent has to offer as you walk through Acorn Alley.
  • 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - Enjoy Mediterranean wraps, hummus, pita and drinks on the second level of Laziza and redeem your drink voucher here! Test your Downtown Kent knowledge by participating in a trivia game! Trivia game winners get to take home a bottle of wine provided by Laziza! 
  • 7:30 p.m. - Walk to Tree City Coffee & Pastry on Erie St.
  • 7:35 - 8:15 p.m. - Mingling at Tree City Coffee & Pastry - Grab some complementary pastry samples for dessert or explore the available coffee, tea, wine or beer options at your discretion.
  • 8:15 p.m. - Walk to Bar-145 on Erie St.
  • 8:20 - Whenever you call it night! - Drinks and music at Bar-145 - Listen to Dan Fester and Your Villain My Hero over networking and drinks. Stay for a bit or make it a late evening, it's up to you!

PLEASE NOTE: The Downtown Kent PARTA parking garage is located off Depeyster St. If you pay for a permit in advance, please see the YPN representative at the gate for your pass. If you choose not to purchase a pass in advance, you may pay for your own pass when you leave the garage after the event, or you may find parking along the street, or in the lot behind the Davey building. Please keep in mind, street parking spaces may be limited.

This event is a power networking get-together designed for Chamber members to make important connections with their fellow member businesses.  While exchanging business cards is great, it's certainly more effective for business people to learn about one another's respective companies in an intimate setting.  Be sure to arrive at 7:30 a.m. to make the most of this meeting!  Remember, only one person per company can attend, so your networking opportunities are maximized.  The event is free, but the networking is priceless!  Pre-registration is required.

 In 2010, Janet Weir Creighton was elected to the Board of Stark County Commissioners. As Vice President of the Board, Commissioner Creighton brings the county more than 23 years of elected experience where she has cultivated a diverse background in government and public affairs.Chesser Baird 2013 

 

Prior to returning to public service in Stark County, Ms. Creighton was Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs from January 9, 2008, until January 20, 2009, in Washington, D.C. As the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, she was the direct liaison between the President and city, county and stated elected officials. From 2004 until 2007, Ms. Creighton served as Mayor of the City of Canton. Prior to serving as Mayor, she was the Stark County Auditor from 1991 until 2003 and Stark County Recorder from 1985 until 1991.


As an elected official, Ms. Creighton strongly believes in collaboration, cooperation and communication which she emulates through her leadership roles. She diligently works to improve the lives of the constituents whom she serves and to be a positive presence throughout the community.

YPN Leadership Luncheon Series: Nonprofit Leadership

Akron Zoo Hosted by Akron Zoological Park 

 

The YPN Leadership Luncheon Series was created to provide young professionals a more in-depth opportunity to access and learn from established leaders, network with peers and provide employers opportunities to showcase their organizations to the community's emerging leaders.

  

The event will include networking, lunch and a presentation from the following nonprofit leaders:  

  • Patricia Simmons, President & CEO, Akron Zoo
  • Hope Bradley, Executive Director, Stewart's Caring Place
  • Rochelle Fisher, President & CEO, Habitat for Humanity of Summit County

The speakers will discuss their paths to their current roles, the challenges they faced throughout their careers and advice they would give up-and-coming young professionals. Additionally, they will discuss how they do BIG things on limited budgets.

Love Akron Network Seeks Nominations for Community Service Awards

Love Akron logo The Love Akron Network is accepting nominations for recipients of two awards who exemplify service to the community.

Nominees for the Brenda Burnham Unruh Servant Leader Award must be a Christian who exhibits integrity and good moral character and who voluntarily provides service to the community. The award is named for the late Summit County Common Pleas Judge Brenda Burnham Unruh.

 

The Fowler-Larson Allies Award is given to two people who embody service to the community and have forged a relationship that overcomes cultural or denominational differences. It is a tribute to the collaborative leadership of the Revs. Ronald Fowler and Knute Larson, who modeled an interracial and interdenominational relationship.

 

The recipients of the awards will be honored during the second annual Love Akron breakfast on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2013.  For more information or to submit a nomination, go to www.loveakron.org. Tickets for the breakfast are $50.

 

Love Akron is dedicated to bringing Christian leaders together to work toward the spiritual and social transformation of the greater Akron area.

This year, the Festival is expanding its event offerings with a new global fusion Artist Avenue to complement their Fair Trade Market and cooking demonstrations to complement their authentic World Café, complete with international wine tasting. Also new this year is their health fair with emphasis on athletics and holistic and alternative health demonstrations. The Children's Nation has added Table Top Games of the World, interactive language games with prizes, elaborate face painting and a photo booth!  Enjoy the Festival's other most popular experiences: global education, dynamic music and dance groups, the interfaith dialogue and the announcement of the Visual Arts Post Card Contest.

2013 Small Business Convention - October 24 & 25, 2013

2013 Small Business ConventionThe 2013 Small Business Convention presented by COSE and the Greater Akron Chamber is one of the largest gatherings of small business owners and entrepreneurs from across Ohio. The convention will connect participants through two days of national keynote speakers, peer to peer workshops and exhibitors. It will also provide access to new ideas and networking opportunities, with more than 60 workshops and countless opportunities for formal and informal networking.

SBC Kick-off Event - Business Pitch Competition
