Natural Gas Market Update
Periodically, CES will provide updates on the natural gas or electric environment. This month's focus is on the natural gas market compared to last year at this time. This information pertains to the commodity portion of the bill not the utility charges. For the typical natural gas customer, natural gas-related expenses have increased when compared to gas-related expenses just one year ago. Last year's abnormally warm winter created a market in which gas through most of 2012 was sold at or below $3.00/MCF. This year, we've experienced a normal winter, much colder when compared to last year, and prices on the gas market have reflected that change. Additionally, the colder seasonal weather has increased the average customer's demand for heating and therefore, increased the amount of gas used when compared to last year. Temperatures last winter were so abnormally warm, many customers had already began using their air-conditioning system by the end of March. Unlike last year, most of us can expect to use our furnace for heat through the end of March. The change from the warm winter of last year, to the seasonal winter of this year, has not only increased the price you pay per unit of gas, it has also increased the amount of gas that you have used. These are all factors to keep in mind when reviewing your natural gas bills and as you budget for next year. If you are not already in the Chamber Energy Solutions benefit program, please contact Debbie Richmond at (330) 237-1228 to learn more about the CES program and how you can better manage your natural gas costs. |
