June/July 2016

Here is the latest news from the Johnson City District of the United Methodist Church.

Stop Hunger Now
Jesus said when we feed the hungry in His name we are in fact serving Him by serving others (Matthew 25:35). Here is your opportunity to do that...

On Sunday August 7 at 4:00, the 197th annual Sulphur Springs Camp Meeting will kick off with a hands-on mission project to package 10,152 meals in less than 2 hours with Stop Hunger Now.

But we need your help!

Will you commit to volunteer for this 2 hour span and package meals to feed the hungry? You don't need to bring anything other than your desire to serve Jesus by serving others, everything else (including some very stylishly fashionable hair nets) will be provided.

Here's how you can help:

Sign up to volunteer HERE

If you can't make it and still want to help out, you can! Each meal costs only 29 cents. You can send in your tax deductible donation to help out. $29 = 100 meals!!

A familiar face is joining us for this year's Sulphur Springs Camp Meeting! Rev. Dr. Randy Frye will be preaching Sunday-Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm. Area youth will be bringing great praise music all week, but if you love the old hymns, you can sing those as well along with music leader Gail Morris. After Monday night's service there will be a free ice cream social.

Local Mission Opportunity with a Global Twist
Join our Czech friends in helping your neighbors!

This fall four of our Czech friends are coming to the Johnson City District to work alongside us as we work with Appalachia Service Project on homes in the Johnson City area. Jana Krizova, Bohumil Opocensky, Jaroslav Trachta, and Jiri Cerny will be here the beginning of September.

The ASP project is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 6 and will last through Friday, September 9. The project days will be full from 8:00 to 5:00 with many possible assignments from construction to deconstruction in preparation of rebuilding and painting. ASP will provide all tools and equipment required.

Email Betty if you would like to be part of this work crew. We are also looking for volunteers to provide housing during their visit.

West Virginia Flood Response
Widespread flooding in West Virginia last week killed 23 people and left thousands homeless. News reports indicate nearly 1,200 homes were severely damaged or destroyed. It is in times such as these that United Methodists join together to help those in need.

Holston Conference delivered 500 Cleaning Buckets this week to flood survivors in Beaver, West Virginia. Now, we need to replenish our supply so that we are ready when the next call for help comes.

If you would like to help, go to the UMCOR website for a packing list and complete instructions for assembly. Buckets can be delivered to the Johnson City District office during normal business hours. Please deliver buckets by Friday, July 22 so that we can schedule a pick up by the conference response team.
Summer Camping Returns
Camping
Camp Bays Mountain served the District this summer by providing four camps; two Camp-in-the-Community sessions, a day camp and an Outdoor Leadership Camp aimed at high school students. Our goal was 87 campers however we were thrilled to serve 120 campers! It was a very successful season to begin your new camp.

This September we will host a "Commissioning Service" at the new camp to give our Districts a chance to come to the new site, take a tour, worship and pray over the new ministry. Look for details coming soon.

We are in need of these three things that perhaps your church might provide:
  1. A donated pick-up truck
  2. Work teams who would come for ONE DAY for a demolition project and landscape clean-up
  3. Funds to purchase a commercial mower
