News Update

Greetings!

Here is the latest news from the Johnson City District.

Walter Weikel A Word From Walter

Dear Friends,

Words are important.  That seems obvious and yet I know I have been guilty of being very casual with my words.  I've said some things I regretted as soon as I heard them coming out of my mouth.  I've also been pleasantly surprised on those occasions when I've said things that I felt served to calm nerves and heal wounds.

I admire pastors who can preach a whole sermon without any notes.  I honestly don't know how they do it.  I have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast.  I can't imagine remembering a whole sermon. I'm the type who works for hours and hours trying to refine every word I utter.  I even practice how I say things.  When I try to be too extemporaneous, I tend to make mistakes with the words I choose.

For the last several months, I have been meeting with a group of lay people and pastors to try to craft a mission statement for the Johnson City District.  We spent hours and hours and hours and hours trying to refine the words for our statement.

I would like to share the fruits of our labor with you:

"Together, we WILL share the love of Christ through life-changing missions and ministries, inspired worship, empowered and trained leadership, and growing churches."

Central to this statement is the passion to share the love of Christ.  Everything in this statement points back to the desire to share Christ's love.  We also wanted to boldly say we WILL accomplish our goal to do this through mission, ministry and worship.  We want to offer training to our leaders to help accomplish these goals.  And the desired outcome of this will be churches that grow spiritually and numerically.

I would like to ask you to share this mission statement with the members of your congregation.  See what they think.  Report back to us on the ways that we might be able to fulfill this mission.

I want to let you know that our planning on a District level will try to incorporate this mission in everything we do.  Help us keep these things in mind as we plan for our older adults, youth and children, missions projects, financial plans, District Days of Discipleship, etc.

God bless you and the words you utter today.

Walter Weikel

The Holston Conference Council on Finance and Administration thanks you for your giving through the tithe and second mile giving.  For a special message for your church, visit  waytogive.holston.org.  You will find a video and bulletin insert to use during the month of February that will rejoice in the ways our conference youth ministries support young men and women in their faith.  Thank you, Holston. You'll never know how many lives you have changed. Way to go! Way to give!

Johnson City District Youth present their joint talent at Resurrection 2014.
"Something Beautiful" Happened at Resurrection

In January, the youth of the Johnson City District once again joined together to present a talent offering at Resurrection 2014. Their offering included the song "Something Beautiful" with soloists, choir, and a variety of musical instruments.

The musicians were joined on stage by groups and pairs of dancers throughout the performance. At the close of the song, a large painting, created especially for this talent offering by district youth, was carried onstage.

Laura, a senior from Munsey Memorial UMC, stated in a video interview, "Starting last year, we decided that it would be best if we, instead of competing against other churches, just made one huge district talent. It has really been such a great opportunity working with other youth from other churches and getting to know other kids. It's been a lot of hard work. We spent a lot of hours putting this together and it wasn't easy." Laura also remarked that seeing how God has worked in all of the lives of those involved in different ways was meaningful.

When asked what he looks forward to most about Resurrection, Quentin, also a senior from Munsey, said he looks forward to getting closer to kids of different ages and from other youth groups. The most important piece of advice he had to share with younger youth coming to Resurrection is, "Listen to the speakers and pay attention to what they're saying."

If you would like to see a video of the Johnson City youth talent offering, it is available for download here until March 11.

One Acre Café Lunch Vouchers Available

Dear friends and partners in ministry,

At this point we hope you have heard about or perhaps have even visited One Acre Café in Johnson City (if not we invite you to visit us at www.oneacrecafe.org or check us out on Facebook).  Our mission is to be a space that exists to "nourish the body, replenish the spirit, and grow the community so that all might be fed".

As we began the journey of One Acre Café, it was always our intent that the church would play a large role in developing the heartbeat of this beautiful space that God has set apart for Himself.  Thus far the church has been amazing both through their financial support and more significantly through their prayers and hands on involvement.  In an effort to deepen that partnership further we would like to offer a means by which we can continue to honor Jesus' mission to  "proclaim the year of the Lord's favor (Luke 4:19)" more intentionally.

On any given day we are all encountering great need in our communities and access to food is very high on the list.  Historically, the church has done an amazing work in providing food for individuals in need.  It is a beautiful experience to meet the need of another through the gift of food and more beautiful still to couple it with affirmation, hope, and an experience of community; One Acre Café is a harbor for each of these.

We would like to make you aware of the availability of Lunch Vouchers for a meal at the café.  It is our hope that as individuals in need present themselves you have a powerful resource to offer them.   A resource that not only provides them with a nutritious meal but offers them an opportunity to engage through volunteerism in an environment where they are affirmed, can experience the richness of community, and perhaps know the blessing of contributing to that community.

The café offers three plate sizes; small, medium, and large.  Most plates include an entrée, two sides, a dessert, and a drink; the cost of these plates is $4.00, $6.00, and $8.00 respectively.  We can provide Lunch Vouchers for any of these plate sizes.  Giving a Lunch Voucher to someone in need not only offers a meal but directs them to a place which they can experience community and if interested and qualified, job training in food service.  If you have any further questions or believe that this is a resource that would further enhance the programs that you already have in place in terms of the members of your community that God has called you to help, please contact us by email at info@oneacrecafe.org or call the café at 423-483-0517.

One of our Executive Committee members can make themselves available to come and speak with you or your church body at your request.

We truly look forward to partnering with you!

My Experience at One Acre Café

By Betty Yeomans-Barton

Have you eaten at One Acre Café yet? Have you volunteered your time? If you haven't done either of these things, you are missing out on some great food and a great opportunity for ministry!

On any given day of the week, you will find volunteers from all walks of life preparing meals, serving customers, washing dishes, or busing tables. There is no distinction between those working for their meals and those who have simply show up to volunteer.

I recently had the opportunity to spend a day working with a group of friends at the café. I had not served tables in 35 years, but as I told the staff, I have a lot of experience eating out, so I felt I could swing it. The day I worked, we served a record number of diners - 167. I was a little rusty at first, and the one thing I simply could not remember was to put a packet of butter on the plates that included bread! But, the atmosphere of this place was such that no one seemed to mind my gaffes, and I quickly felt comfortable in my work.

I am not sure how many diners I personally served that day, but two of them stand out in my mind. The first was an older woman who was accompanied by two younger women. As I served them, I learned that this lady was "paying it forward" by treating her favorite servers from a fast-food establishment to lunch. This is the sense of community that One Acre Café instills in its customers.

The second memorable diner was my last customer of the day. By this time, the lunch rush had slowed and many of the tables were empty. I had already taken my own lunch break, but for some reason decided to cut it short and get back to work. I was assigned a single diner at different table than the ones I had served all day.

Because this was the only table I had at the time, I was able to spend a little extra time with this diner, and she shared her heart-breaking story. I won't go into details, but will say that I firmly believe that God placed this woman in my path. Not only because she needed a meal and could not afford to pay for it, but more importantly because she needed a listening ear and someone to show they cared about her and what she was going through.

Volunteers can sign up for as little as one hour, or as many hours as they want. If they are not available during the lunch hour, they are free to come in early to prepare for the day or later to help clean up. Training is provided, and new servers are paired with experienced servers until they feel comfortable on their own.

If you aren't led to volunteer, there are still ways that you can support this ministry. The café is open weekdays from 11 am - 2 pm, so stop by for a delicious, well-balanced lunch. The café also hosts groups for special evening events.

And, if you find yourself looking for a good place to eat lunch this coming Friday (February 28) come on by, and you might be lucky enough to be served by yours truly!

Camp Information Meeting

Let's Get Our Kids to One of Our Conference Camps THIS Summer

As you know Buffalo Mountain Camp is in a time of study and recovery and will not be able to host summer camp this summer.  However Holston Conference Camping is very interested in getting our children and youth to one of our other three  Conference Camps - Camp Wesley Woods, Camp Dickenson and Camp Lookout.   We want our children to experience wonderful theology,  great camp staff and life-changing weeks in God's beautiful outdoors.

It is our thinking that parents and children's workers and youth workers might feel more comfortable sending their children to one of the other three camps if you had a chance to meet the camp staff and hear about the programs more directly from the summer camp directors at Wesley Woods and Camp Dickenson.   So, please join us at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday March 23 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist in room LL10 for an informational meeting.

Jason Onks is willing to use the Buffalo Mountain vans to help get our children/youth to and from the various camps this summer if we can get a minimum number for particular weeks.  He has several weeks available for possible transport.
