Dear colleagues,

Happy Spring from here in the northern hemisphere! Earth Month is soon coming to a close, and we hope you have contributed to the health of our planet in some way ~ perhaps through design, policy, writings, or even participating in our "Love the Earth, Plant a Roof or Wall" Earth Month Photo Contest! We have a total of 8 entries from: The U.S. (5, from D.C., GA, MA, OR, WA; 2 from Canada; and 1 from Norway). Voting is super easy and ends on April 30 at 11:59 am. If you haven't already (1 vote per person), VOTE for your favorite NOW, and encourage your colleagues, too. The winner will be announced on May 1st from the entry with the highest number of votes!

If you're in the market to learn about the trials, tribulations, and successes of starting your own small greenroofing business, be sure not to miss reading "The Farm on the Roof: What Brooklyn Grange Taught Us About Entrepreneurship, Community, and Growing a Sustainable Business." I found the gritty, intimate, sometimes funny, and extremely insightful book by Anastasia Cole Plakias, vice president and founding partner of Brooklyn Grange, to be not so much a How-To on rooftop agriculture as it is on creating a small, sustainably-principled and run business; it reads like a novel yet is full of practical advice, including on vegetable crops, soil issues, farming conditions of a roof in the sky, etc.

Don't miss Contributing Editor Steven Cantor's "Copenhagen Green Tour" about his visit to numerous green projects at the end of last year. Known for writing widely about landscape architecture practice and his photography (see his 14-part High Line series), Steven gave lectures at Denmark's largest trade fair on sustainability as well as at a private practice and, of course, brought along his trusty camera.
