Apparently Fall is "Awards Season".  It's been fantastic to see so many worthy companies receive recognition for their hard work!

DMACC hosted its third annual Small Business Awards event, the Iowa Association of Business and Industry conducted its first annual Legends in Manufacturing awards dinner, and one of DBR's clients, Express Logistics, was named a top logistics and transportation company!   Keep reading to find out more about each.  Also, please let us know about honors and awards your company has received recently so we can feature you in a future newsletter.

On September 29, 2015, Elevate Advanced Manufacturing and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry recognized 5 outstanding leaders in manufacturing at its first "Legends in Manufacturing" awards dinner. Awards winners consisted of:

New Java Program Targets Women
DMACC and a group of central Iowa employers recently designed and launched a new initiative to add more diversity to the IT profession. 

DIAD, which stands for Diversity in Application Development, is a program that provides accelerated instruction for qualifying women of Iowa employers to earn a Java Application Developer Certificate after only eight months of intensive training.   
 
The IT Industry Partnership board which created the program with DMACC includes Nationwide Insurance, the Principal Financial Group, Casey's General Stores, Pioneer Hi-Bred, Farm Bureau Financial Services, SHAZAM, Workiva, Alliance Technologies, GuideOne Insurance, Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance, Keyot, Technology Association of Iowa and Iowa Communications Alliance.

DBR Goes Global!
DBR's workplacelean program has attracted international attention! Bonnie Slykhuis and Emily Betz, workplacelean consultants just returned, in fact, from a week-long international "Lean in Higher Education" conference in Waterloo, Canada where they presented two lean workshops: "Clearing the Path - Key Elements to Ensure Success on Your Lean Journey" and "We are the Champions - Creating Internal Resources to Drive Your Lean Efforts". DMACC has demonstrated how lean can be successfully applied to internal DMACC processes and this is attracting the attention of other higher education institutions who what to streamline their own process as well.   
 
While in Canada, Bonnie and Emily visited the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) to learn more about the Toyota Production System (TPS), the basis of most lean programs. They were able to see lean manufacturing practice at its best in the assembly of Toyota Camry and Lexus car models.

Machelle Sabin
We are thrilled to welcome Machelle Sabin as our newest Lean Facilitator.  Machelle is responsible for facilitating Lean initiatives throughout DMACC's six campuses and providing training and consulting services to external manufacturing, service, government and education clients.    
 
Prior to DMACC, Machelle worked as a Learning and Development Consultant for 17 years.  One recent project included helping the Iowa Judicial Branch implement electronic filing to the entire State.

A3  
A3 is a structured problem solving and continuous improvement approach, first employed at Toyota and typically used by lean manufacturing practitioners.  A3 is simple and strict approach systematically leading towards problem solving over structured approach.  The process got its name because the problem solving structure is all done on a single sheet of A3 paper.

SharePoint is a tool to connect people and information.  It provides a central site for sharing information with other users.  SharePoint is web-based and accessible from anywhere in the world via an internet connection.

This web-blended 5S program will teach participants to apply 5S tools and techniques to their workspace with the goal of improving functionality and workflow.  The web-enhanced offering allows participants to dive deeper into their understanding of 5S.
