To assist in your preparation of the 2016-2017 school year, NASN updated its Back-to-School Toolkit and organized it to align with the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM. You will find new checklists for families and school nurses, student and family outreach initiatives, health office tools and templates, resources that articulate your role, new educational courses and activities, and so much more! These resources are designed to support you in ensuring students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn!

Red Cross Needs Health and Mental Health Professional Volunteers to Respond to Louisiana Flooding

School Nurses have expertise in working in the community and would be a great asset to the Red Cross in meeting needs in Louisiana. The Red Cross has been providing shelter and health and mental health support to thousands affected by the floods in the Gulf States. Many more health professionals are needed to support clients and responders with disaster related health needs. Mental Health Professionals can contact dmh@redcross.org and nurses and other health professionals can contact Respond@redcross.org.
New Program Launched to Help Raise Teen Vaccination Rates

NASN and Sanofi Pasteur have joined forces to launch Stats4Vax: Improving teen vaccination rates one school nurse at a time (Stats4Vax). This new program provides resources to guide conversations with parents/guardians to see that teens are up-to-date on their immunizations. This school year, school nurses in NC, CA, and FL are invited to pilot the Stats4Vax Challenge encouraging high school nurses to track and improve teen vaccine rates (which are dismally low for some vaccines!). Recommendations to Address New and Ongoing Adolescent Vaccination Challenges

In February 2016, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases hosted a virtual roundtable to discuss the long-term health impacts of under-immunized adolescents and the important role healthcare professionals play in increasing vaccination rates. The results were recommendations highlighted in the report, Call to Action: Addressing New and Ongoing Adolescent Vaccination Challenges. Also developed were an animated 30 second public service announcement and an infographic.

CDC has developed interim guidance for kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) district and school administrators for actions to take to reduce the potential risk for Zika virus transmission at school and among students. This guidance is intended to address concerns about the risk for Zika virus infection in K-12 schools, provide information for planning school-related activities, and recommend actions that can be taken, in consultation with local public health authorities and government officials.
