Nasal Spray Flu Vaccine Should Not be Used During the 2016-2017 Season

On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted in favor of an interim recommendation that live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the "nasal spray" flu vaccine, should not be used during the 2016-2017 flu season. The ACIP vote follows data showing poor or relatively lower effectiveness of LAIV from 2013 through 2016. ACIP continues to recommend annual flu vaccination, with either the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV) for everyone 6 months and older. Learn more.
Progress in Acetaminophen Education

According to a nationwide survey of 1,000 U.S. adult pain medicine users conducted by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, consumer knowledge about how to use acetaminophen safely and awareness of its risks are at record highs. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Know Your Dose campaign, which the Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition founded to educate consumers about this very issue-acetaminophen safe use. Prevalence of Depression Among U.S. Youths

HealthDay News  
A report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that nearly 3 million U.S. adolescents had major depression in a year, with the overall depression rate among youths rising from 9.9% between 2012 and 2013 to 11% between 2013 and 2014. The findings also showed that Oregon had the highest rate of adolescent major depressive episodes at 14.6% while the District of Columbia had the lowest at 8.7%. Access HealthDay News article.
American Academy of Pediatrics Announces New Initiative to Confront Violence in Children's Lives

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced a new initiative in the wake of the recent killings in St. Paul, Minn., and Baton Rouge, La., and of five police officers in Dallas. The AAP will convene a group of pediatric experts to identify new approaches to protect children, adolescents, and young adults from the epidemic of violence occurring in their everyday lives. The initiative's will address gun violence and the underlying contributors of racism, religious intolerance, homophobia, xenophobia, terrorism, or any other form of intolerance. Read more.
