As a school nurse for many years, I still like to "return to the basics" and review the responsibilities that school nurses should competently perform. An essential resource for school nurses is the School Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. This book includes a detailed statement on the scope of school nursing practice, effectively answering the essential questions: the who, what, where, when, why, and how of school nursing practice. It also includes standards in two sets - the Standards of Practice and the Standards of Professional Performance. The standards delineate how outcomes for school nurse activities can be measured. I encourage you learn more about this book, as well as the numerous publications available in the NASN Bookstore. Thank you for always striving to provide the best care for your students.
