October 8, 2015

This week is National Mental Illness Awareness Week, a time to raise awareness and help erase the stigma associated with mental illness. Today, October 8, is National Depression Screening Day, a day to bring attention to the needs of those diagnosed with depression and mood disorders.

It is NASN's position that mental health is as critical to academic success as physical well-being. School nurses are uniquely qualified to identify students with potential mental health concerns. They also play a vital role on school mental health teams, collaborating with referral and follow-up of children in need of mental health services. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the numerous mental health resources, publications, and continuing education opportunities NASN offers found on NASN's website.

Thank you for all you do every day to support the physical and mental health of students.

Beth Mattey, MSN, RN, NCSN
NASN President
