School Nurses in the News
As School Nurse Duties Grow, Numbers Stagnate
The Garden City Telegram (Kansas)
The Kansas Legislature's in-house auditors released an efficiency study of Topeka's Auburn-Washburn USD 437 earlier this summer. One of the auditors' findings was that the district could save money if Auburn-Washburn replaced four of its 10 school nurses with "health aides." Chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes are on the rise among children, as are serious allergies. Nurses also help form individualized education programs and screen children for vision, hearing, and obesity-related problems. NASN member Chris Tuck, and health director of Topeka's Seaman USD 345, said, "What we do as school nurses is we support teachers to educate the kids." Read the article.

Firearm Safety and Children

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly supports that firearms be removed from the environments where children live and play, but if not, they must be stored locked and unloaded. Safe storage practices can reduce the risk of death or injury, but loaded firearms and unloaded firearms and ammunition represent a serious danger to children. Access the AAP resources about firearm safety and children.

Dental Sealants Prevent Childhood Cavities
One of the best ways to help prevent childhood cavities is the application of sealants on all molars and premolars. Sealants are a thin plastic coating placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Early visits to the dentist for regular check-ups is a good start. Access more information about sealants.
