"These cases are the essence of school nursing - a solid understanding of disease processes, and a commitment to providing all the educational and developmental opportunities possible for each individual child." ~ A quote from Jo Volkening in a discussion list conversation on SchoolNurseNet. The month of September marks the beginning of another school year and also provides an opportunity to practice a bit differently. During September, as we recognize National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, let's offer proactive steps to encourage students to eat healthy meals, add exercise to daily activities, and encourage all around healthy activities. School nurses influence children, families, and communities to make healthy lifestyle choices. The NASN Position Statement, Overweight and Obesity in Youth in Schools - The Role of the School Nurse, identifies actions for the school nurse to assist students.
Thank you for helping your students to make healthy choices.
Beth Mattey, MSN, RN, NCSN President of NASN
