Each new school year, we are reminded of the increased demand for health services in schools, especially as we experience an increased number of students with special healthcare needs and disabilities. The school nurse can fully implement the professional role by sharing some nursing tasks as explained in NASN's position statement, Role of the Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse in the School Setting. The Licensed Practical Nurse or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) can be a valuable member of the school health team led by the registered professional school nurse. School nurses must be aware of the scope of the LPN/LVN's practice within their state nurse practice acts when delegating tasks. Together, we can ensure students remain safe, healthy, and ready to learn. Beth Mattey, MSN, RN, NCSN President of NASN Better Health. Better Learning.™

NASN President Beth Mattey said, "Initially, children are excited to come to school and we may not see children with stomachaches or headaches immediately, even if they are sick. But when the excitement wears off and the effects of sleep deprivation begin to take a toll, (I) see exhausted kids who are hurting and unable to concentrate." Read the Article. |
