I hope you are enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer! The 2015 NASN Conference in Philadelphia is now in the history books! This year was particularly meaningful as I celebrated being inducted as the 37th President of NASN. School nurses are my heroes; you provide care for children so they are healthy, safe ,and ready to learn. You make a difference every day! The American Academy of Nursing (AAN) has selected 163 nurse leaders to be inducted as Academy fellows (FAAN) which include three school nurse leaders: Erin, Maughan, PhD, MS, RN, APHN-BC, NASN Director of Research; M. Kathleen Murphy, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FNP-BC, University of Texas Medical Branch and former NASN Board of Director from Wisconsin; Cheryl A. Krause-Parello, PhD, RN, University of Colorado. The induction ceremony will take place during the Academy's annual policy conference, Transforming Health, Driving Policy, on October 17th, 2015, in Washington, D.C. Continued congratulations to Erin Maughan who was selected to the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) Board of Governing Directors to represent NASN and school nursing. ANI is a group of nursing organizations whose mission to to advance nursing informatics. Erin very actively promotes school nursing to informatics leaders increasing the visibility of school nurses and the importance of including school nursing documentation in child health EHRs - thus facilitating care coordination across settings. NASN Inducts Beth Mattey as its New President At its 47th Annual Conference, NASN2015, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (June 24-27), NASN inducted Beth Mattey, MSN, RN, NCSN, of Wilmington, Delaware, its new President for the two-year term 2015-2017. Currently, Beth is the school nurse at Mt. Pleasant High School (Brandywine (Delaware) School District). As NASN's new President, Beth will support NASN's brand platform, School Nurses Build a Foundation for Student Health and Education. Read the Press Release.

Measles is Highly Contagious Consider measles in students or staff with fever and rash, and ask about recent international travel or exposure to international travelers. On July 2, 2015, the Washington State Department of Health confirmed a measles-related death. It is recommended students and staff make sure they are protected against measles. New Grants Support Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health has awarded 81 new grants to support evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs. The awardees may be an important resource for your practice. Check out Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program grantees to see if one of the grantees is in your community.

National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) Revises Publications NDEP, a joint program of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revised its most popular publications to reflect best practices in plain language and health literacy.
