School Nurses: Supporting Education, Advancing Student Health

It is time for me to pass the baton to Beth Mattey, the next NASN President, who has been my leadership partner over the past two years. It has been a pleasure to serve as NASN president and to lead the strategic planning process and to launch the strategies directed to keeping students healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

The strategic plan is set in the direction of transforming school health and school nursing to meet the challenges of the 21st century. It is to raise the voices of school nurses in the policy and practice arenas to strengthen child wellbeing. The progress is evident in programs and resources for members found on nasn.org.

Thank you for all you do to support education and advance the health of your students.

Carolyn Duff, MS, RN, NCSN, President of NASN

School Professionals Can Help Students Understand Death
Children need to understand four essential concepts about death before they can truly comprehend a loss. School professionals who know about these concepts can better understand children's thoughts and reactions to death - an actual loss, a TV show or movie, or even an imagined death. It's also useful when providing advice to parents wanting to help their children cope with a loss. Learn more at the Coalition to Support Grieving Students
