Teachers Work with School Nurse After Student's Allergic Reaction on Zoo Trip
KLTV ABC 7 (Texas)
During a field trip to the zoo, an East Texas first grade student suffered from an allergic reaction after visiting the petting zoo area. Prior to the trip, they spoke with the school nurse about what to do in case of an emergency. During the ordeal, the teachers were on the phone with the school nurse and EMS, and administered epinephrine. Access the story.
National News That Matters to You
NASN Proud to Partner on SAMHSA's National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative
NASN's partner, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has launched its National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative. This new campaign called "Helping Children Recover and Thrive," aims to raise awareness of child traumatic stress and the many resources available to help address it, and includes new PSAs in English and Spanish, as well as a website and a series of new materials.
 
State Departments/School Health Partner to Meet Student Needs
The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services highlight how state health departments partner with schools and others in the management of students with chronic health conditions to improve health and education outcomes, including strides towards better identification and tracking of students with chronic disease and conditions. Teens Use the Internet for Health Information
Washington Post / June 2, 2015
Researchers surveyed 1,156 U.S. teenagers and found that 84% of teens searched the Internet for health information, with 23% of them having searched for information on a condition affecting family members or friends. The study also revealed that 55% of teens said they got most of their health information from their parents, followed by health classes in their schools, and doctors and nurses. Access the article.

Gauging the Impact of School-Based Health Care On Students' Health, Wellbeing and Educational Outcomes, A Panel Discussion
Friday, June 12, 2015, 12:00-2:00 p.m., EASTERN  
A school-wide culture that includes a focus on good health practices, promoted and monitored by health professionals, should increase students' attendance and wellbeing. The research has been minimal, leaving many policy and political leaders with little understanding of the role and value of school nurses and school health centers. This panel brings together researchers, practitioners, and policy professionals in this field, including NASN member Martha Dewey Bergren and NASN Director of Research Erin Maughan, to discuss additional research and strengthening current education and health care policies. NASN Presented Uniform Data Set at Health Services in Schools Training
NASN was represented at the Health Services in Schools: From Cost-effectiveness Studies to Distributional Justice held at Stanford University on May 29, 2015. Speakers included a diverse panel of researchers of school health. NASN presented about the Uniform Data Set and importance of using Big Data in school health. Learn more about this initiative.

NASN, the Co-Chair of the Student Health Advocacy Coalition (SHAC), invited special guest speaker David Esquith, Director of the Office of Safe and Healthy Students, U.S. Department of Education, to discuss his Division's programs, as well as provide an overview of the legislative landscape during a recent SHAC meeting.
