St. Johns County School District (Florida) names 2014-15 School-Related Employee of the Year The St. Augustine Record (Florida) NASN member Amy Lynch, school nurse at Liberty Pines Academy (Florida) was named St. Johns County School District's 2014-15 School-Related Employee of the Year. According to the article, Amy was selected for her job performance, commitment, interpersonal skills, leadership ability and extensive training. She recently researched and developed stock epinephrine guidelines for treatment of life-threatening allergies, now under consideration by the school board. Read article.

New Vaccine You Might See on Student Vaccine Records The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Quadracel™ (DTaP-IPV) vaccine for children 4 through 6 years of age. This new combination vaccine can be used to reduce the number of vaccine injections. Quadracel™ can be administered as a fifth dose in the DTaP series, and as a fourth or fifth dose in the IPV series, in children who have received 4 doses of Pentacel® (DTaP-IPV/Hib) and/or DAPTACEL® (DTaP). Opportunity to Comment on National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) HPV Working Group Recommendations On average, there are 25,900 newly-diagnosed cases of HPV-associated cancer per year in the U.S. Despite available vaccines, completion rates of the recommended series are well below the national Healthy People 2020 target of 80 percent. NASN was part of the NVAC HPV Working Group charged with investigating reasons for this low vaccine uptake and identify existing best practices to increase use of this vaccine in young adolescents. Public comment on the draft NVAC recommendations report is open through May 6, at the Federal Register. Your comments could strengthen the role of schools and school nurses in addressing this public health gap in HPV vaccine uptake.
U.S. Senate Committee to Debate "No Child Left Behind" Legislation The U.S. Senate HELP (Health, Education, Labor and Pension) Committee will debate the "No Child Left Behind" legislation on Tuesday, April, 13, 2015. Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Patty Murray (D-WA) have reached a bi-partisan compromise. Enactment of this legislation, which contains legislation about Specialized Instructional Support Personnel, is a NASN priority. Read about the bill. The Summit included decision makers from health care, payers, advocates, and industry and used liberating structures to find solutions, including all inclusive electronic health records and patient-centered communication structures.
