NASN Membership Dues Increase Equals More Value for Members
At the winter meeting, the NASN Board of Directors approved a membership dues increase of 5% in all member categories. As of April 1, 2015, NASN Membership dues will increase. This increase means NASN will be able to deliver the highest quality programs, services, and products to members and continue to advance school nursing practice. Measles Case Puts Merced Community (California) on High Alert Merced Sun-Star Measles awareness in Merced County (California) has heightened since a child in the area testing positive for the highly contagious viral disease. The child was under the age of 5, and had received one of the two vaccinations recommended to protect against measles. The child has since recovered. NASN member Leslie Schleth, the lead school nurse at the Merced City School District, said, "... last week's news prompted school nurses to re-evaluate how they identify children who are not immunized against measles." Current Measles Situation The number of measles cases continues to grow in the U.S. While most cases are linked to an amusement park in California, three other unrelated outbreaks are occurring. Come to NASN's Conference in June to hear internationally known pediatric vaccine expert, Dr. Paul A. Offit, speak about the 1991 Philadelphia measles epidemic and the implications for school nursing practice.

NASN and School Nurses Represented at Childhood Asthma Leadership Coalition in Washington, D.C. The Acting Deputy Director of the Disabled and Elderly Health Programs Group at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) presented about the changes in the Free Care Rule. Obesity in America The Harvard School of Public Health estimates that obesity accounts for more than 20 percent of America's healthcare related expenses at about $190 billion. The cost in lives is equally staggering - 18 percent by Columbia University's estimates.
