February is National Heart Month and school nurses are key in supporting student health and difficult health decisions, even when it involves a Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) order. Families today face many challenges related to health but none more sensitive and emotionally-charged than an order for DNAR. It is the position of the NASN that each student with a DNAR order also has an Individualized Healthcare Plan and an Emergency Care Plan developed collaboratively by the registered professional school nurse with input from families and providers. I encourage you to review the NASN Position Statement, Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) - The Role of the School Nurse. A conference session on DNAR is also scheduled at NASN2015. Thank you for the care you give from your hearts, Carolyn Duff, MS, RN, NCSN, President of NASN

Primary Sources are Best Resources for Evidence Books can be a great resource for basic information, but are not generally considered a primary source of evidence. Articles that report research results or synthesize many research studies (even better!) are primary sources of evidence to use and are viewed as stronger levels of evidence. A Systematic Review of Oral Health Behavior Research in American Adolescents provides an example of an article that synthesizes many research studies. [NASN members have access to full-text articles.]
