It is an absolute pleasure and privilege to serve as NASN President and to be a part of the many NASN accomplishments for 2014. I thank you for the opportunity to serve an organization that supports nurses caring for children while at school. I am very proud to begin 2015 with the strategic plan fully in motion for NASN to lead the transformation of school health. Please continue to explore the many learning opportunities and resources NASN offers, including NASN position statements as tools to communicate the vital role of the school nurse in all topics related to school health services.

New Medicaid Guidance to Improve Access to Quality Healthcare Services On December 15, 2014, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a State Medicaid Director Letter on Medicaid Payment for Services Offered without Charge (Free Care). National and state organizations are discussing the implications of this guidance for students who are Medicaid beneficiaries.
National Panel Develops Recommendations for Children's Vision and Eye Health Systems The National Expert Panel (NEP) of the National Center for Children's Vision and Eye Health (NCCVEH) at Prevent Blindness has published recommendations providing an evidence-based approach to vision screening in children ages 3 through 5, as well as system-based public health strategies to ensure improved surveillance and program accountability as it relates to children's vision in the United States. Champions for Kids and Walmart are Helping Students and School Nurses In 2014, more than 5 million children received basic necessities and more than $350,000 in cash was awarded to local schools. Champions for Kids and Walmart set a goal to reach a total of 10,000,000 children in 2015. Champions for Kids is looking for volunteers in your community who are passionate about helping students and supporting school nurses. The first program launches in February.
