In school nursing, social determinants of health affect our practice and our students. It is our role to be aware of social, cultural and economic factors and impacts of those factors on student health and learning. As school nurses, we can strive to recognize differences and polish our skills to make students feel safe and valued at school. The cultural competency content on NASN is a great place to find helpful resources on this topic. Thank you for being role models of cultural competence and providing quality school health services that interface and integrate home and community factors to support education and advance the health of students. Carolyn Duff, MS, RN, NCSN, President of NASN
