School Nurses: Supporting Education, Advancing Student Health

November is National Diabetes Month, a perfect time to acknowledge the work you do to enable students with diabetes to fully participate in learning and other school activities. School nurses are leaders of school health teams and work tirelessly with students and families to provide a supportive, healthy, and safe learning environment. Browse diabetes resources to support your practice on NASN's Children with Diabetes webpage.

Also, in the midst of flu season, it is important for school nurses to be vigilant and promote awareness of warning signs of type 1 diabetes that may appear as flu-like symptoms.

Thank you for the care you give all year long.

Carolyn Duff, MS, RN, NCSN, President of NASN

Diabetes Awareness Program
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening condition and is often the presenting symptom of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes in youth. The symptoms of DKA are also symptoms that children who have the flu may experience and may be missed by healthcare providers. A delay in diagnosis of diabetes may lead to death. School nurses can take action and save lives, by increasing the school community's awareness of the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes. Access a parent letter and poster for your health room.

Health Resources for a Diverse School Community
School nurses address and can help eliminate the health disparities in our healthcare system. The NAACP has a wealth of information and resources to assist school nurses to communicate with students, parents, and the school community to address issues of HIV, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Latinas.
