School Nurses: Supporting Education, Advancing Student Health

The holiday season is approaching and the excitement is building as we look forward to happy celebrations with family and friends. As school nurses we know that holiday anticipation is not joyful for all students and instead brings stress, fears, and even sadness for some.

As you plan to listen to and support those special students and their families, please take advantage of the NASN online learning course to reinforce your knowledge and skills related to the behavioral health of children and adolescents. Strengthen your roles in school mental health teams to deliver quality services to students to help them prepare for self-care during the holiday season.

Thank you for the care you give all year long.

Carolyn Duff, MS, RN, NCSN, President of NASN

New Resources to Reduce Excessive Anxiety in Children on the Horizon
NASN recently joined a development workgroup to refine an intervention for school nurses to reduce student anxiety called CALM - Child Anxiety Learning Modules.  This project, in the first of three years, is being lead by the University of Connecticut Health Center and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, funded by the Department of Education's Institute of Educational Sciences. Pilot testing with school nurses will refine the resources (e.g., a manual with a sample IHP, intervention strategies, student & family handouts, and an evaluation plan to measure health outcomes). Updates on this project will be shared with other mental health resources on NASN.org.
