Sirven: School Nurses on the Front Lines of Health Care KJZZ 91.5 Commentary Dr. Joseph Sirven, a KJZZ commentator and the Chairman of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic "..., my wife is a school nurse (NASN Member Joan Sirven). Forget my obvious proud bias here and let me say, most people just don't appreciate what a school nurse does. It's more than handing out Band-Aids or hygiene pamphlets while sending malingering students back to class. Boy, has this role changed. Any medical condition can be seen in the school nurse office: kids with chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, food allergies requiring daily and sometimes emergency medications." Be on the Lookout for Signs of Concussion The Union NASN member Karen Harris, RN, school nurse at Nevada Joint Union High School (NJUHS), said last year 76 diagnosed concussions were recorded at NJUHS alone. National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) Offers Information about Diabetes in Children and Teens This NDEP program, through NIH and CDC, provides resources to help children and teens manage their diabetes and to lower the risk for getting type 2 diabetes.
